I used to do stay-in-home dog sitting. Most people would have a guest room that I would stay in. One woman lived in a smaller house with one bedroom and insisted I sleep in that bed, but I just slept on the floor with the dog.
In retrospect, that sounds really weird 🤔
Anyway, tips would be:
- leave notes on how to use major appliances, or if they shouldn’t use them.
- If your neighbors are nosy, maybe indicate that you’ll have someone new staying over/walking the dog et cetera. I had a few awkward run-ins with well-intentioned friendly/nosy neighbors.
- Be clear about how much time you would like the sitter to be at the house. Some people insisted that I go about my daily life per usual, and just make sure the dog was walked twice, fed twice, and then that I sleep there from 10pm-6am - any extra time was at my discretion.
All the time. Have had great success by using dog sitters who came personally recommended through friends, neighbors, and Nextdoor. So much easier than taking them to a boarding place and you get a sense of some home security as well.

Yep, we have a guest room and bath they use. Longest we've used someone was 2 weeks. Few tips: Best to use someone bonded and insured, do a meet and greet with you and the pups first, leave detailed info (food, potty breaks, walking, vet info in case of emergency, POC should something happen to you - sorry, sounds bad but necessary, mail pick up, etc.) Some people like using Rover.com too by the way but my experience hasn't been great.
I wasn’t bonded/insured, and I was also just trying to make ends meet by juggling a few jobs, so I charged $35/night. Longest I did it for was 14 days, and I liked that best because I was able to establish a routine. Not sure what the going rate is for comp these days, but I wouldn’t be surprised by $100/night at the upper end.
Definitely try to get someone that comes recommended by someone you know well. If not, I would pay more $ to go with a professional service. Just my two cents 😊
As for comp - we have one service that will do it for $80 a day/night, including overnight + two visits during the day. Others charge 70-80/night then charge another 20 for each visit. Gets expensive but with a few dogs, it's about the same or less than boarding them and a lot easier and less stressful on them and us. :)
Slalom1 do they sleep over in a guest room or something? What’s the longest time you’ve been away? Any tips? Thanks for the reply btw.
WM1 thanks for the tips! Do you think a 10 day gig is too long? How much would you ask for compensation?
Also curious about comp.
What did they charge? Is it a daily rate?
It’s fantastic!
