Has anyone went agency side only to realize going back to brand side was better? I’m on the brand side, but agency life has me so interested.

I jumped to client side and realized I’m an agency gal thru and thru, so I switched back again. That was 12 years ago. No regrets - I made the right choice for me. I would encourage you to explore what’s reigniting your interest in agency, as it may validate a gut feeling you’re experiencing. Good luck 😘

I can only imagine what your experiences have been like in your career, and this is exactly what I was hoping to see in a response.

I read a lot of people frustrated about banner ads on here, but I’m totally that person that would banner ad my life away to get that one shot to deliver something on a national/global scale. To me, it’s one of those “as the twig is bent so grows the tree” type of things.

Apples and oranges. Neither side is better than the other. It all depends on what you’re looking for. Agency side typically brings a faster pace, longer hours and more creative variety and opportunity. And, at the more senior levels, more money. Brand side is often slower pace, better life balance, but less variety creatively. Both a great gigs. Just depends on what will make you the happiest.

I think the long hours, creative variety, and opportunities intrigue me most. I work crazy hours right now but there’s no growth and no mentorship for development.

Left agency side a year ago to go brand side. I will say for someone who enjoys focusing on work, agencies feed your creativity more. At agencies, I was able to change accounts and learn how to flex my skills in a completely different way every two years (and learn about categories I never would have otherwise). I also learned from amazingly talented people each time. I didn't appreciate how much agencies 'fed' my mind and curiosity until I left. My experience Brand side is that folks tend to want to take the path of least resistance and just get home. Sometimes that means putting the work on agencies (including work that should sit with the brand) and not having genuine desire to own the direction of a brand. Also, that spark of doing great work isn't there, it's a bit more focused on politics. This is obviously my opinion of one, but agency side was more satisfying than client side

I would suggest having experience both client side and agency side. It will help you understand the challenges of both and better able to predict and manage the relationships. Then pick which you prefer long term from there.

Which side did you choose?

I’ve been brand side and am now working agency side. Creativity variety and different projects are great. Not sure about your fascination for long hours, but you do you!

@B&CC1 - I appreciate and agree with your perspective. My point isn’t so much to say that a life of inefficiency is the way I’d like to be, but more that I’m willing to spend the extra hours to get the job done right and thoroughly, especially when things happen last-minute as they often do.

Moreover, if the cliche is true that early years in ad agencies are spent working your days and night to earn your stripes, then I would be willing to lift that load to grow, especially if it means it will accelerate my goals.

I’m a newer father, and I couldn’t imagine NOT having time to spend with my family on a regular basis. I don’t think I would ever say that the best parts of my life involve work, but I know I won’t say that I wish I had tried harder to get my family the best safety and financial security I can.
