Geographical heritage??! That’s a new euphemism if ever I heard one 🤣
To all:
Us Asians can be terse and blunt. This comes off often as rude or not sugarcoated enough for someone to be considered ready for management. I feel one should be given leadership training/mentoring so they're ready for the position. A manager needs to have the skills to inspire and lead a team to success.
If no such training is offered then perhaps you can look for opportunities where you're able to show getting a group together and leading them to success on some projects.
Do you have soft skills or leadership skills? How’s your scope? Could this actually be related to your competencies rather than your geographical heritage?
Yes. I worked hard at it. I made comments in my younger years that - while they may have been accurate - because they weren’t carefully crafted, came off as cold, bit*hy, etc. years later, I’m much better, but still it took a lot of retraining myself.
What makes you think that it’s got something to do with your race? It sounds like you’re asserting it’s because of your race and not maybe other legitimate reasons.
Yes!
Is that unusual for Asians?
Without knowing you, it's tough to say if that's valid feedback or something racially biased. Leadership/people/soft skills are often the biggest gap for people who've been high performers in individual contributor roles and are looking to move into management.
That said, as a POC myself, its definitely hard to discount biases altogether. If it's possible, seek out a mentor who is able to give objective feedback.
Yes, and often it's not because one doesn't possess them, but there is a cultural bias in America that has been perpetuated through decades of media that Asians are not natural leaders. The preconception seeps into the subconscious and creates what is called the bamboo ceiling. A ceiling that continues to grow and is often unreachable. The percentage of Asian c level executives in relation to middle management where Asians often get stuck speaks to this bamboo ceiling that grows at the pace of actual bamboo. Asians are often working to overperform their counterparts just to be seen on par with them. It's exhausting
