Has anyone worked for a CA firm while living in CA, then continue to work for that firm remote? I am inquiring re: the tax implications and if CA will still try/be able to collect taxes even when my address, etc. changes. Thanks!

Your W2 should be based on your residence.

Please don’t shoot the messenger, but I think you’ll still be taxed because it’s income from a California source. I would consult with an expert but this is what I found online:

“Generally if you work in California, whether you're a resident or not, you have to pay income taxes on the wages you earn for those services. That's due to the “source rule”: California taxes all taxable income with a source in California regardless of the taxpayer's residency.”

like

It’s also notoriously difficult to change your residency for CA tax purposes. The address on your drivers license, etc. is only one factor. I read a tax case recently where the state was able to obtain cell phone records to determine how many days the person spent in the state even when they bought a home in Florida and changed all their addresses to Florida. I really think it’s worth getting an experts opinion if your tax savings would be significant.

I’m working remote for CA, and then moving to CA. My taxes are based on where I live (which is not CA at the moment)

not yet. Hopefully I will be soon!!

You should definitely be paying CA taxes if your employer is based in CA no matter where you live. You may receive an offset come tax time if you also pay taxes in your home state.

Hi ! Looking for advice. I’ve been with a company in BC for 2.5 years, started support role, promoted to smb AE a year ago. salary is 65k with uncapped commission. We recently did layoffs, I was kept however there have been changes & meeting quota has become difficult & we have a way heavier workload. The perks are amazing but I need to make more money. Do you think I could get a role with more money with my experience that’s fully remote even in this “recession”..thoughts?

I know my earning potential is way higher but here’s the catch - as far as I know I’m fully remote forever and really comfortable in my role.

Thoughts? Criticisms? Suggestions?

All my six-figure salary consultant friends are ranting about how poor they feel right now because their IRAs/portfolios are down. Think the people in this industry need to take time to volunteer or engage with some tougher parts of town and understand that by virtue of even having investment accounts, that they’re more financially safe than at least 50% of America. Sad to see

Need advice! I’m currently interviewing for an account executive role and there’s a couple of red flags that have come up. 1. They aren’t able to tell me when I would have to relocate for the remote role I applied for. 2. Midway through the interviews—-the team decided to bump me down to a level lower which changes the base salary and commission. The recruiter is also unable to disclose why the team made that decision which makes me uncomfortable. What would you recommend?

No idea about team/culture/stability differences yet.

The non-work factors I'm debating are:
1. Cost-of-living (housing!). Could probably afford a nice ~$1.25M SFH in Seattle suburbs sooner than a fair $1.5-2M near Cupertino.
2. Public School quality. Unsure private will be affordable.
3. Weather/region: activities

My company is in need of a update online, could use your opinions! We need to better showcase our culture (caring, supportive, fun, intelligent IT industry leaders) as well as diversity. We are predominantly white still but making strides to improve here. What’s the best way to approach? I don’t want to seem disingenuous or that we are singling out our diverse employees (asking for photos). We have a remote and on-site workforce about 350+ EEs. Non white EEs make up about 35% of the company rn.

The PE culture is sick. The 20 something VP was rude to our partner because our team took thanksgiving and the day before off and it was in the engagement letter that we were gonna be off.
