Going from the big leagues with crappy hours to playing tee ball with potentially crappy hours. Don’t do it
There are smart people at regional and big four (there are dumb people at both too) but regional is a vastly different risk profile. I’ve done plenty of work paper reviews of BDO, RSM, etc and the amount of issues that are completely missed or just swept under the rug is much different than PwC or other big four. Again, not because the people aren’t as smart but the firms are just willing to live with more of that
I don’t know much about the culture of the firm on the tax or advisory side, but on the assurance side I can say that I have had a great experience with Moss and have never, ever regretted my decision to work here instead of a Big4. The culture of our firm (at least in the NorCal offices I’ve worked at) is pretty laid back and you’re given a lot of opportunity to take ownership of your career. I am a senior and I have enormous flexibility in my schedule. I work from home *very* frequently, I have the freedom to schedule my work hours to suit my preference (I prefer to start later and work later), I take time off whenever I need to for appointments, etc. I have a hobby that requires me to make commitments for certain dates and times and my teams are more than happy to accommodate my schedule for that. I have direct relationships with my partners which has really helped me feel more connected to my career through their mentorship. I am given the opportunity to take on clients and projects that interest me personally and whenever I’ve expressed an interest in pursuing something, my career advisors and mentors have found a way to make it happen.
Need more info before we can give you helpful thoughts. Why are you doing it? Specifically what do you expect to get out of Moss Adams that you can’t get at PwC?
Mostly to be closer to family
I started out of college and have been with the firm for 7 years and am very happy. Flexibility seems to vary with each region/office, so you’ll have to narrow down your research to get a better idea of what you’ll be getting into.
I’ve been very happy working for Moss Adams in NorCal region. You get more flexibility as you move up, as I’m sure is true with all firms. What industry or experience are you interested in gaining over the next couple years?
I left PwC after 4 years then went to MA and left a little after 3 months to go back to Big 4. They’re not even on comparable playing fields and as an ex PwC employee you’ll be in high demand
