Has anyone worked in a firm with “non-traditional” compensation structure ? I.e. you get paid by the billable hour not a salary with minimum expected billable hours. Pros/cons? I like the concept but all concerned about if I need to take time (single mom here with two elementary school-aged kids)

I've had one salary gig and one commission based. No hours requirements for either, but the salary job made it clear that I needed to pay for myself and paralegal. I much preferred the salaried job. I also have two young kids.

Married for 14 years with 5 kids. Since the start, my wife has had anger issues. She’s not violent, but will go on ‘anger benders’ for days where she cannot be kind to me, stonewalls, and even leaves. Sometimes this is based on a bad argument; most recently, it’s based in a story she conjured up and believes about me having an affair with my neighbor, even though it is 100% false and I’ve tried to show her that. Is this a sign of a personality disorder? Or something else? How can I support her?

First year question, do people usually give something to their assistants during the holidays? Context (contd).

I recently left a company because I didn’t see eye to eye with management about recruitment. The company I worked for regularly touts its commitment to D&I but in the recruitment process my candidates were routinely exited for having natural hair, being too old, too “urban”, etc. I’m not looking to bitterly blow up their spot but I feel like someone needs to be aware of this. This was done at the higher levels of local leadership and I have no connection with anyone in corporate. What to do?

Just wanted to share this with people who would understand. Had 4 IEP meetings last week. I told her not to worry, in our program I will have him for 2 more years. Boy that made me feel good.

Anyone here work in a firm where there are no female partners in your office? I feel like I have a lot of advancement opportunities from at least one partner but there is no clear route to partnership being shared at this point. I have been told it’s because all of the up and coming women in our firm haven’t made it there yet but I’ve only seen one woman become partner in the last few years (in another office) and the rest of the female partners have been laterals…

I’m currently a junior associate in a boutique litigation firm handling IP. I’ve taken a depo already, will argue in court next month and by all accounts, I am great at it. But I’m miserable. Recalling my first onboarding meeting in-house with the c - suite. Thinking back now recalling that they would often mention if someone they are referring to is a woman. For example, "Oh we have these two women doing x, y, and z and they do it well, a well-oiled machine." etc. I was the only woman in the room. They did not mention when someone performing a particular role was a man but they did point out when it's a woman, happened about four times. Odd, no? What would you make of this?

Today I was complimented for my “maturity” for how I responded to a problem and it was shared that a partner or two also commented on my maturity.
