I think it would largely depend on what role you have on the hill. Senate Committee staffer has very different exit opportunities than a house member’s press secretary.
The job is committee staff in the senate, so I’d have an expertise and skill set
I started off as a legislative assistant in 2007, and after one year I was recruited to come work for a startup in the same industry I was working as an LA. I was cleared to take the job, and it aligned well with what I wanted to do. The best part is I still have those connections. And you cannot put a price tag on that. If you’re a super networker, I say go for it! If you’re quiet and a little more reserved a out mixing and mingling with the egos on the Hill, stick where you’re at. What you will not find on the hill is consulting money. It just doesn’t exist.
Committee staffers have great exit opportunities! In addition to going to consulting or industry jobs many go to appointed positions in the WH or executive branch agencies. Working on the Hill is a great networking opportunity that will help you with whatever you want to do next. Only thing that sux is the play is low and the hours can be long at times. It’s definitely a young person’s game.

What is with this exit opportunities business? People on this app really make a mountain out of a molehill with finding their next job. Only YOU limit your exit opportunities with your internal thoughts. Learn how to SPIN whatever jobs you have worked.
Former staffer, I agree with everything LA1 said. Definitely foot stomp the money but I’m sure you are aware. Now is a great time to be looking at Hill jobs since there will be a lot of movement with the new administration.
Just make sure to network, keep your reputation in tact, and do great work. If you’re able to do that then lots of exit opportunities come available to you. Best of luck!
Are you getting any sort of clearance? You said it’s Senate Committee work so that’s already going to look pretty good (relative to other Hill positions), only improved by a clearance
This has been super helpful, thank you all so much. I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts and experiences as well!
Take the hill... network like crazy... become a major player within a federal practice or form your own boutique firm!!!
