I had it come up last year before. I used it as an opportunity to teach about the Black Panther Party as a parallel organization that tried to do positive work and was demonized. Then I assigned something I made called the Social Movements Research Project. Students had to find a social movement that currently exists, explain what it is, and why they would potentially join it.
Interestingly enough it came up this year when we read,”What to a Slave is the Fourth of July.” Frederick Douglass actually talks about the uneven criminal justice system. That’s when it came up in my class. Great discussion.
I am a little surprised by this question. The topics have to be a regular discussion, if not featured aspect, in the classroom.
I work really hard at the beginning of every year to create a safe space for students to regularly engage in conversations about race and equality. Normalizing and providing the environment for this has led to the best teaching moments I have ever had.
Granted, I teach ELA, and it may be easier to foster this in my content area or in a history class.. but there are definitely ways to accomplish this in Math and science.
I sincerely urge anyone reading this to figure out a way to implement these topics in your lessons. You and your students will only benefit from it.
