Hi! I’m new here.

The bigger problem is when a building tries to implement a phone policy and then staff don’t enforce it or blatantly disregard it and mock it with their students.
Staff selectively enforcing the cell phone policy is a big issue at our school too. Kids aren’t supposed to have them in their possession. But we can’t take them. According to our principal, we are responsible for them if we take them and he’s afraid of a kid blaming a pre-existing crack or some malfunction on the teacher.

Our policy is that all cell phones and watches are to be turned off and put away in their backpacks until the end of the day. There have been problems with this because the students don’t follow the policy and we often find their phones in their pockets. I have them turn off their cell phones and place them in a plastic bad with their name on it. I place the cell phones and watches in a container and lock them up until the end of the day. I explain to them that it is for their protection as well as mine because they can get in trouble for recording or filming anyone without their consent.
I saw a great Tik tok where a teacher has chargers and a big extension cord at the front of the room where kids can plug their phones in! Her mentality is that if they are charging their phones at the front of the room they aren’t on them! Don’t know how that coincides with different cell phone policies out there but it’s already a hack I’m saving in the back of my head if I start to see a bunch out this year!
My rule is that we respect each other. We usually work in small groups. I explain that it is not respectful to be on your phone when your group member needs your input. I try to give respect and it hasn't ever been a problem. Kids make the decision to leave phones in their locker or place it in their backpacks so that they aren't distracted. I actually have to tell the kids to bring phones/cameras to document lab activities or record video responses in media projects we do in class.
