Hate it when you make some small typos because you are doing a million things at once and get a passive aggressive scolding.

Here’s my patented method to deal with this: Finish drafting document. Get up, drink some water, mentally cuss at partner. Sit back down and use spellcheck. Thank me later

I feel this. I spellcheck, but after like 9 or maybe 20 hours working on something, stupid shit comes out wrong. “Potion” instead of “position.” And somehow “my work could have been done by an 8th grader.” 😂😂

My all time favorite was a typo that a good friend/colleague made. She typed out “Chief Execution Officer” and then copy/pasted it and did a find/replace all for the term CEO. The doc ended up going out to the client with this mistake repeated about 30+ times throughout the doc! Luckily, it just went to the junior person at the client, who had a chuckle and then asked us to fix it before she passed it on.

Better than an aggressive aggressive scolding?

One thing I learned a few years in (while dealing with this same issue) is that “fresh eyes” always seem to help. Either read later after a coffee break - or even a day - and print out the document. Go over it with a pen and read the words not the content. This may not be billable but neither is correcting simple mistakes a partner notices. I found that help me catch a lot of my issues. And believe me it still happens. Luckily now I have a good assistant who catches those for me (by doing this same method).

It is part of the drafting process, just not a part that I would pass along as an expense to my clients. To illustrate, here’s how the billing entries would read: 1. associate bills for drafting document, 2. Partner reviews document in prep for sending to client 3. Associate edits/revises document based on partner’s review 4. Partner reviews associate’s work again in prep for sending to client. One and two above are “recognized” billable time for which I would expect receipts to be paid. Three and four are not. They still should be logged for tracking hours (if that’s how your firm operates) but if I were reviewing that bill I would write off the time for three and four. In my eyes that’s akin to having a conference with an associate to discuss a specific case; it’s an internal procedure that most clients (at least all of my institutional clients anyway) do not pay.

Helpful hint: read your draft out loud. You’d be surprised by the number of stupid errors you can find that way.

Continue living in with parents where you’re constantly stressed out (and paying $650/month) or move to a nice studio in NYC/SF for $1500/month? That’s a $10k YoY difference + I’ll likely be WFH through 2021 so it doesn’t seem like such an easy choice. Thoughts?
