I need some more background. How did you and the interviewee network and what was their interview process like? Did you exhaust all resources before you decided you wanted to secure them the position?
I found him through a resume search of applied candidates and decided to interview him. We didn’t know each other beforehand. He did well in all interviews and feedback were all positive.
I selected him as my only preferred candidate for the committee - I did all I can I think

“More diversity” = non (East?) Asians? This was said? What’s the history of the role, the team, the vertical, etc? Do you know the other candidates that are being positioned for the role?
Also, EY1 saying “White/Asian” males is...telling lol.
They were very careful with the language but I think that’s what they meant - I am the hiring manager and there’s no other candidates are being positioned for hire.

How in the hell is Asian not diverse? Explain
Depends on the firm and how they interpret diverse. It’s unfortunate but those in this bowl may feel we are few but it’s possible there are other groups who are even fewer. Also, we are in much smaller numbers when compared to other minority groups in general public. We are the minority of the minorities
I am looking for more tactical advice on how to approach this vs starting a whole debate - I know I want to hire this person but don’t want to trigger HR. Any past experience on handling this issue? Specifically asking for tech.
A couple thoughts that I have - I can put this candidate on hold and interview diversity candidates until this whole climate blows over. However I’m worried I might lose him to other companies. I can bring him in for an additional culture fit interview but that’s risky and likely not productive.
(Nothing related to helping you with a solution) would this be a potential legal problem? I know an HR in Google sued the company for asking him not to recruit White/Asian males

Trigger HR, if you interviewed everyone and this person was the best person challenge them in it.

Just remember that whoever you hire you will have to deal with. Not HR.
What. Tha. F***? Ask HR. Could it potentially be a visa thing? Eg I was told when recruiting a few years ago we were not accepting h1bs at the time.
Sucks because HR probably instructed HC to do this so I’m hesitant to bring this up with them.
Try escalating to someone who can overrule HR. Ideally the exec who will realize the business benefit of this new person's work.
This is a really good idea! I can try escalating it’ll for sure help to have another voice in the room.
Was your slate of interviewees diverse? If not, I can understand why they are asking you to meet more people. I don’t read their actions as saying no to your candidate but encouraging you to take a look at additional candidates you may have overlooked initially.
It is not, but all of the qualified candidates (based on the minimum qualification part of my JD) are of white or Asian (at least according to our internal system). I honestly think it’s the bare minimum to do the job.
