ATK all day
Edit: use the ATK Principal offer to push BCG to up their offer to Principal. If they don’t play ball, go with ATK
Agree
I wouldnt push to join as a lateral Principal at BCG. You’ll want the runway as PL to onboard to BCG’s way of doing things, build relationships, and develop pull from a partner group. Unless you join with a ton of experience and partners who already want you for specific industry expertise, it will be hard to hit the ground running to be both billable and quickly demonstrating a viable path to partner at BCG (which is how youll be evaluated as a P) . You’ll also be competing with other Ps who already have a good network and may have worked with the same partners for 2+yrs I say this as a BCG P2 who has met a lot of laterals in my 6yrs here. I don’t know much about ATK but this could easily be the case there too for the principal role
Here's the thing. This is your career. Make as much money as you can, while you can. I'd take the ATK offer, because yearly growth (raise) will compound off your salary . Bonuses are great at BCG apparently, but that's not what your yearly raise will be calculated on. And taxes eat away at the magic. Furthermore, if I had that opportunity I'd take ATK, then leverage it some years later to move to industry at a great level. Just my two cents.
Biased here... but I’d say take the BCG offer. You can get promoted to P within 18-24 months. You should also look at salary and bonus progression. Ours are quite fast. Ps make more than 260.
BCG2.. come on.. ignoring all the data. Bad advise- biase backed advise.. lol
Go with bcg. Even after you leave, you have the obligation to work in the fact that you used to work at bcg in every conversation
Yeah. I’ve seen them do it. And then they are offended when the other people don’t know what it is. I think there are a lot of insecure mbb alums flopping around the world. I mean they are all doing great by 2% standards, but it feels like they sometimes think of what could have been for them. Sigh
What industry / functional focus are you looking at, OP? That might play a role. Otherwise, I’d say ATK. We’re a great bunch, more flexible and entrepreneurial due to size and our new leadership is really great. BCG would probably have bigger reach and more exit ops on average if you’re looking into that
Cont... is the AT Kearney offer good for a Principal? Or should I try to negotiate to increase it?
I’m biased but I say 100% BCG. First you need to look at total comp vs base - PL all-in is way more than 195k. Second BCG is a totally different caliber of client / work, I’ve been at BCG 5 years and I think gone up against ATK once for work. Finally as others have said, coming in as a principal is not without risk, as the commercial expectations are likely high from the get-go
B8 anecdotal. You might be in different regions, you might serve different industry etc. We all serve F500, PEs, Startups etc
BCG PL bonus can be quite high. If you’re making the choice purely by salary, I’d look into what the bonus structure is for both firms.
Should go with BCG. bigger brand name. And the comp will be closer to 250-300k after bonus. From what I know ATK bonus is a lower % of salary so that gap is bridged pretty rapidly
At that level, exit opps will be similar. Atk is more tech focused. Bcg is a lot more broad
Lol, EY1 has no idea. ATK4 is right. Depends on what industry/practice you want to be in. ATK and BCG both have certain practice strengths. Would make decision there. If equal, would then consider pushing BCG for a Principal role. But would absolutely pick your focus area first
