Have 2 options for jumping ship while also trying for 1st kid - 1) boring job @ large company w/ 4 months family leave, or 2) career accelerating job @ well funded startup, 1.5 mo fam leave. Thoughts?

I have never met a single person who said "damn, I wish I made more money rather than spent so much time with my child" so I'd probably say more time at home

like

You might be under estimating how easy or difficult it is to have a child. I would go for the larger company if I were you.

like

I agree with the above. Nothing can replace the time with your kid. Startups will be there.

1st kid is going to be a major life change. I would opt for stability at work (i.e. the large company) to help balance.

like

It’s incredibly difficult to leave a 1.5 month old baby to a nursery. Some people end up quitting their jobs because of this.

like

Depends on the large company. If the brand is strong go for it, have a kid and go to a startup 2 years down the line. Startups are tough, the difference here is much more than just the family leave time. Remember what's ultimately important in life.

like

Depends on your situation but I am at an industry job now that gives four weeks of leave (after the standard 6-8 weeks of disability). I had my kid in July, took six weeks of disability and I’m not even taking the rest of my leave. I really like work and thought it was mind-numbing being home all day with an infant for six weeks. I do have the luxury of leaving him with my mother while I’m at work. Moral of this is whatever works for you will work for you and you’re likely not going to know how you feel until after the kid arrives. I would take whichever job you think you will like better.

Aside from family leave, lower stress from boring Corp vs startup may actually accelerate the process of getting your first child underway: excessive job stress can be a form of birth control

Agreed with M1 and BCG1- go with the large company

I’m a junior attorney, and my goal is to work in-house for a professional sports team (preferably an NBA, MLB or NFL team) or a record label, but of course these positions are highly-coveted. I started down the traditional path of working in biglaw (NYC) to receive the necessary training and experience while also trying to build relationships. However, biglaw really isn’t for me, and I’m exploring regional firms in Boston. Is it still possible to break into the sports/ent. industry? Any advice?

I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?
