Have a 9 day vacay to Greece in mid May. I’ve never gone that far or had such a different time difference on vacation (as an advisor) and I’m nervous about being gone for that long. Continued..

Let clients know. They are more understanding than you believe. I was in Paris then Lebanon. What I did was tour till 3pm then check emails. I’m central time so here it was 8am. It worked out. I made sure I asked clients if they might need a distribution, if we could do it before I left. I wanted to make sure everyone was ok. Your clients will appreciate your proactive call. Greece has Internet cafes every where. Relax and have fun. Use Skype, free.

Agreed I think clients are understanding. Like many things in life we create our own stress and worry unnecessarily.

Last year I went to Albania for three weeks on a vacation to visit family. I reached out to my top clients and I told them that I was leaving and I gave them my assistant’s phone number. I went in July which is very slow for us in the NE. I took my lap top and I would log every couple days first thing in the A.M. when my family was sleeping. I had no connection issues , the house I stayed in at wi- fi. I like to stay connected , I can’t go dark for more than a few days. Good luck

I don’t like going dark or at least not knowing what’s coming in either! Thank you!

Unplug and enjoy the time off. Some of my favorite vacations are ones with limited or no access to email/internet/phones. Like most of the others said, proactively call the clients you need to tell about your plans (you know who they are). And the work will be there when you get back

like

Agreed on having no connectivity. It’s nice to not have it - just never not had it in since becoming an advisor and hoping it all goes well. I will definitely reach out, honestly probably to all of my clients (I’m pretty new) and I’ll probably also set an out of office just in case.

Good timely thread. I'm going on a 2 week camping vacation this summer and will have little to no connection. First vacation in a decade. Excited, but nervous to be away that long. Hopefully preemptive communication will do the trick. Thanks!

I think being proactive will help for sure though. Enjoy it!

I do have a backup advisor in our practice but he’s so slammed that I’m afraid something is going to fall through the cracks if someone calls or emails him. I usually log in for a little bit on vacay to make sure anything is addressed but I have no clue how connectivity will be in Greece or how the time difference will affect my ability to do that. Should I proactively reach out to clients letting them know I’ll be gone and that I may have limited accessibility but to contact my backup or just try to check in daily while I’m gone? I’d like to completely check out but i just don’t think I can do that where i am in my practice development. I’m leaning towards proactively letting them know I’ll be gone and to reach out to the back up if they need anything...thoughts?

I’m interviewing for in-house and firm roles and I’m not sure how to navigate the compensation issue. My first job out of law school was with a state regulatory agency so comp was slotted and basically limited to salary and PTO. What should I be looking for when I interview in-house? With a firm? I don’t want to leave compensation on the table and end up feeling undervalued later.
