Ask:
What does the career path look like? Time between roles? Salary progression?
Where are people 2 years after taking this role? 5 years? 10?
I heard advancement was slow. Is there any truth to that?

Have a call tmr with the hiring manager to address my concerns/have him sell me on role. What are some questions I can ask to gauge relative potential of role?
My background is in strategy
The easiest way to confirm is to find people in peer roles and see how long they’ve been in those roles. As a former COO I can tell you that OPS roles are usually long term landing spots.
My 2 cents - Sitting in a F500 internal strategy role now, and I wouldn’t take a 15% bump to work on our FP&A and Commercial Finance teams.
I would say in some respects it can be more stressful of a job, and the work is a bit more mundane (e.g. constantly pulling numbers from SDFC/CRM or your internal Finance systems).
I would probe to see if this team gets involved with any aspects of sales strategy (e.g forecasting, greenfield / whitespace, quota setting) or if it truly is a BO reporting role.

All corporate jobs are dead end jobs in the sense that the pyramid allows for way less advancement than in a professional services firm.
But join in FP&A and you can be CFO...
