Advice needed! I was laid off in Jan and since then I’ve been building my own practice (which I started last year and was doing on the side). Since Covid happened, work has been a lot slower so I started applying for jobs. I got two job offers in these past couple weeks, but the problem is that neither is in the area I want to practice, though the experience from one of them would be probably useful in the future. Ultimately I want to have my own practice, but my dilemma is that as a 3rd (cont.)

mgr and I haven’t always had the best relationship due to micro managing, and it’s gotten worse while wfh — shes constantly pinging me during random times in the day (which makes me anxious), will ask me where I physically am during our check ins - I’m not sure if I’m imagining it but i feel like she’s asking where I am to see if I’m working enough — any advice? (she’s also insinuated that COVID is a chance to work more, and that shes chosen to just work and not read the news)

People - really struggling with this - was supposed to move to bay area for husband’s tech job. I can work remotely. But with COVID I’m not sure if we should make the move. We feel the world will move to a remote/ WFH mode. We want to buy a house and settle down before our kid arrives. Should we move to a cheaper city like Phoenix so we have a big house for cheap and 2 home offices. Am I missing anything?

Ladies, I’ve noticed (pre-covid) that when men introduced each other or even when they enter the room they always shake hands with each other - even if they’ve known them/worked with them for months. But for myself, I may get a handshake on first day but never again. And I find it annoying like do you not think of me as your equal or do you think because I’m a woman I want a hug?? Has anyone else noticed this, or am I taking this the wrong way?

SO is an attorney as well and has been diagnosed with a serious illness. We can’t spend much time together due to risk of COVID exposure so it’s really hard for me emotionally. I don’t want it to affect me at work and faking a brave face is so draining. Just needed to vent, I’m so grateful for this group.

Benefits of wearing masks: 1) Reduce spread of Covid and save lives 2) By reducing spread, we can open up the economy sooner and get people back to work. Note: we didn’t wear masks during the flu season because Covid is 10x deadlier. Any questions?

I asked a vice chair in my group to talk informally about working remotely going forward (we already are remote now and was largely flexible pre covid) and also a possible pay bump. This is my first salary/work benefit negotiation and I’m so nervous I might just unhire myself before we actually get to talk 😭😭

Need recommendations for things to do tonight and tomorrow night in Boston. I am on-site - Boston downtown till Thursday. First time in Boston. I will most probably be solo (may be 1-2 coworkers but not sure). Want to explore the bar scene, and meet random people (like it used to be before COVID). I know most night clubs are closed on weeknights, so looking for next best thing. M, 30s. Tia.

I had a baby right before covid started and all of 2020 was spent struggling tremendously. I wore myself out and stretched myself out too thin . Now when I meet other moms, I spew out negatives about the entire motherhood experience. i can’t be a doting calm mother (I do love my kid). It makes me uncomfortable that I do this. I tried therapy and that didn’t help either.

Hey everyone, so my sister and her boyfriend have both gained about 60-70 pounds since COVID started. I’m getting very concerned for them and I’ve seen firsthand how they’re developed awful eating and drinking habits and they hardly ever exercise. I’m very concerned for them, but I have no idea how to talk about it with them and not make them angry or hurt. Any advice on how to have this difficult conversation?

Hey guys. I have a soon to be nonprofit church struggling because they already started services (collecting offerings too against my advice) before things were set with an EIN and they gave an event already planned out and are trying to find a way to spend and collect before the things are in order. They want to know if one of their small business owners can expense and collect then consider it a donation. Is this possible? Any advice or loopholes that are Legal and will avoid issues later on?

I was laid off from a resource management role, working with employees approaching or on the bench, working with managers to staff projects, and support functions like report creation, scheduling, etc. Roles like this are few and many large consulting firms have frozen internal hiring. Do you think it would be beneficial to get a SHRM cert? Would that help get a "talent related" HR role? Worth the money? I have a background in recruitment as well.

Hot take (i think) - thinkcell is a pretty garbage tool that makes very mediocre / not aesthetic visuals and most of our firms have adopted it out of laziness. The built in ppt / excel graph functions have a much more breadth / depth of capabilities, but everyone seems to shy away because they’re mildly less intuitive to learn.

What are some benefits of mid-tier firms vs the big 4. Is there actually a thing as work-life balance? Do hours really get capped at 55 during busy season? Do the external opportunities get worse without the big 4 name recognition?
