I can’t imagine working there after the recent news, but this strikes me as an entirely personal decision. Also easy to say that when I don’t have the offer.

One idea would be to raise this once you are there and effect change internally.

I just accepted an offer with them, but I had a similar internal debate. In the end I think if a future recruiter is going to judge us on his/her opinion of the CEO of a company we once worked for, rather than on our personal merits, then it perhaps isn’t the right company anyway. I know easier said than done, but it’s how I think about it. In the end, I’m joining FB because there are a specific set of capabilities I want to develop, which I can do in this role, and I’ll do it with a super smart team whose team culture I like, not because I necessarily relate to the CEO.

Well, this is strictly my personal opinion. Anywhere you “work”, you are just another “worker” and nothing more than that. Why think so much when we just work for money? You are not going to change the world working for someone any way

I agree with SC2. Unless you are an executive, most reasonable people aren't holding you responsible for the actions of your company. As special as we like to think we are, most of us are easily replaceable, and most of use aren't coming up with some groundbreaking idea that revolutionizes the company.

I feel like if things like this add up (as they have for FB), I would definitely have it weigh on my conscience. I feel like if I’m working for a company I’m furthering their mission (even if just a little) and attaching my name to theirs. I don’t think I’d be able to work for FB as things are right now. Sounds like a great opp though

You guys are all right. Facebook is God. They should be the sole arbiter of what is true and what is false. Anything they label as false should be censored from the platform and the disseminators of the posts should be permanently banned.

I’m curious, for those saying they wouldn’t work for FB, what is it that drives this view?

Is it a specific event(s) that makes you feel this way (eg. recent Zuck views on the political campaign and fact checking, Cambridge Analytica, the debate around encryption, etc.), or more broadly the whole concept of Facebook and it’s engagement-driven monetisation model (which many say is bad for society)?

I don’t intend this at all as an attack on particular views, but I’m interested to hear perspectives. There are certainly things that I don’t like about FB, but I also do genuinely see a lot of benefit (I.e. I think the core mission of creating community is great, though perhaps execution of it is sometimes questionable)

My opinion is that if you want to to work the Valley or startups the networking alone would be worth it.

They reached out to me a couple of times and I had the same debate (see my other posts for reference) I was in the middle of interviewing for Google at the time and if they offered me a role, I would have taken it and I wanted the role on my own merit, not because I was leveraging Facebook against them. In the end, I didn’t get the Google role because I was too experienced. I have 6 years experience with masters and they were looking for 3 years experience with only a bachelors. I told them of my concerns about this obvious mismatch once I saw their preferred requirements, but they said to trust their process. I was a finalist but I know they guy they hired, and he has 3 years of experience and no advanced degree.

I have not reached back out to Facebook, nor have they reached out back to me, but if they did, I would consider the offer (if I got one) and if there are skills that I could more easily develop there, then I would take it. I will stay at a company for as long as I can be developed and rewarded for my contribution. And if someone will do that better, I will leave. And if anyone looks deep enough, no company has a clean record.
