If you go to Thailand go to chiang mai. Incredible and way better than Bangkok. Thailand in general is awesome though.
Thailand is great but make sure you go other places than Bangkok. It’s just a big party / shopping city. There are tons of islands where you can stay and snorkel / dive every day. Patong beach is fun, and while you’re in the area you can check out Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia....
Go to Phuket and dive the similan islands. Warm water (need only Lycra suit), great reef and sea life. Chartered a boat for a week, saw all tons of shit. Whale sharks, manta rays, black and white tips, so cool.
Definitely try for Chiang Mai as well, and pop over to Cambodia to see Siem Reap. I lived there for a semester and took my new hubby there on our honeymoon. I love SE Asia so much ❤️
OP - we were there for 2 weeks and flew to a different place every few days. BKK -> Siem Reap > Chiang Mai > Ko Lanta > Railay > BKK. Make sure you walk around in every city to find awesome street food for $1. Ask the English speakers where the locals go, or just find a place with no foreigners :). They usually have photo menus so you can just point at what you want.
The last leg of the flight to Thailand will be on a partner airline, FYI. I used global upgrades and we are still in the back from ICN to BKK. Just a heads up.
Go to ko tao for diving. I recommend bans diving. Beautiful, cheap, great accommodations
SA1 - l lived there for 5 months, traveled alone sometimes, and never felt unsafe. Just plan ahead and be smart. Buy a SIM card at the airport (Suvarnabhumi in BKK and Siem Reap airport for Cambodia). Super cheap and you can buy 1-2 week data plans. Google maps works in most of the country. I think I got TrueMove in BKK. Makes navigating so much easier! I didn't have that when I lived there so when I visited and got a SIM I couldn't believe how easy it was to get around and feel confident.
I did a diving liveaboard with the Smiling Seahorse (they operate out of Ranong) and it was PHENOMENAL
Planning a similar trip. Everyone felt pretty safe over there? No major concerns in that regard?
Thinking about doing a solo trip over there - any tips?
