Practice Group Fit and Rank > Firm Ranking
As a first year, very few people will remember that there was even a bridge there at all.
If it’s significantly higher, do it (I’m thinking low V100 to around V50 or a V50 to a V20). The higher ranked the firm, the better your future exit opportunities. And if you’re only a first year, that probably means you haven’t burnt out yet so might as well put those 2-5 years of hard work in at a higher ranked firm. You’ll also get to work on better deals/cases at a higher ranked firm and will get better training. I definitely picked culture and fit over ranking because I naively thought I would be at my firm forever. Don’t make my mistake. Biglaw sucks no matter where you are, even at the least toxic and most supportive firms, and you will likely want to leave. Make sure you’re set up for that.

There are exceptions to ranking and exits, particularly in Silicon Valley, however.

You’re not so much burning a bridge as never establishing one to begin with. If no one from your first firm ever talks to you again, it’s not because you’re blacklisted, just….they won’t ever think of you again.
