Have a very large scholarship to Kellogg versus a small scholarship to Wharton. Looking to pivot to brand management. Which would you choose and why?

If brand management, can speak anecdotally that recruiting is fantastic at Kellogg. The level of connection in the CPG world is stellar and you’ll find pretty much a Kellogg alum in every company’s brand management team. The level of exposure to a ton of different companies right on campus makes it easy to compare and contrast and there’s a large class of 2nd years who can give you specific personal experiences about their summers with specific companies

I’m at Kellogg (so a bit biased) and recruited brand management and honestly the range of CPG companies that recruit there is incredible. I would say in general, as more and more students look to consulting/tech there’s a really tight knit group of CPG-ers and it doesn’t feel competitive because of the amount of opportunities we have. And the marketing faculty and curriculum is amazing.

What ends up being the $$$ delta? Keep in mind Philly is cheaper but tuition is higher at Wharton. Probably Wharton however, but Kellogg is great for CPG. Congrats!!

Wharton, “image is everything”

Hah, it’s both - it is for real that image is everything and Wharton gives you that as compared to Kellogg. Yes Kellogg has a great name - but it’s mainly confined to the US and a bit in Asia - but Wharton (anywhere around the world) will get you an ‘eyebrow raise’ - so go for it!

Starting this by calling out a bias: I’m currently a student at Wharton. I came from consulting looking to pivot to brand management or product management. My experience is that brand management opportunities are solid at Wharton; similar to Kellogg, there are a number of student clubs that will bring on the larger companies doing brand management and a robust set of alumni willing to help. While Kellogg is typically #1 in Marketing, Wharton is typically #2; it’s closer than some realize. I do think both Kellogg and Wharton are global brands, but I do believe that Wharton slightly wins that out in most parts of the world except the US Midwest. You can’t make a bad choice. I know students at both schools who made the same decision you’re making between these two programs. Both are fantastic programs. Congrats again and best of luck!

OP curious if you could share the magnitude or range of the "small scholarship"

Even if you ignore the scholarship factor I would still 100% go to Kellogg. I agree Wharton is ranked higher but if you know you want to do brand management Kellogg is the clear leader. Just go on LinkedIn and look at the top CPG companies - you’ll notice most of their brand managers came out of Kellogg

Congrats on both acceptances. Honestly, I’m not you, but have these notes and questions. Obviously, Wharton brand is stronger and Kellogg is known for being the “marketing” school, but depending on where you stay geographically and how hard you want to recruit, these factors may become irrelevant. 1) before you applied and received money, what was your first choice? 2) what factors made it your favorite? 3) how “critical” is the money? If you’re able and comfortable with higher loans, Wharton works. If you can only go to a school because your matriculation depends on scholarships, Kellogg is not a choice. Ultimately, you only go to b school once so go to the best fit school for you with fit defined by your must-haves and preferences. You can also screen on CleadAdmit decision wire for people who got into Kellogg+Wharton and check the dialogue/rational.

I’d go Kellogg. Yeah yeah Wharton might be more “prestigious” but if it’ll save you money and you know there’s good CPG opps then why not? The only reason I’d take Wharton is if you think your quality of life will be significantly better in Philly.

Wharton. The brand will have more value in the long term

Kellogg for sure

Also consider what city you want to end up in. Kellog is great for the Midwest. Wharton is good for East coast. Not to say you can’t get there anyway. I did my mba at NYU and undergrad penn.

Kellogg. Recruiting at Kellogg is phenomenal. Evanston is beautiful.

Wharton. That delta in money will mean little in 10 years. If you don’t love marketing, you’ll regret not having the Wharton stamp on your name.
