Have an average book at best. Somehow an okay agency hired and then fired me. I acquired lots of credit card debt in a short amount of time. Now I don’t feel I’ll get a chance again. I really don’t want to work menial job again but that seems it will soon be my only option.

There’s no shame working a day job and working on your book at night.

Fix that book!

I took portfolio classes at AdHouse and SVA. AdHouse was much better, but that was 20 years ago. Agree it’s a drag to work on your book, and I still have to do it, too, when there’s a work drought.

Good advice already here. Are you looking in a specific town? Where are you located? Want to shoot your book in this thread so we can give you notes?

1. Do whatever you have to to get rid that credit card debt. There’s no such thing as a ‘menial job’. 2. If you have any kind of agency experience at all, you should already know what standard of work you need to land a decent gig. You don’t need to spend ridiculous sums of money on a portfolio course. You just need to spend (ridiculous amounts of) time improving your craft. 3. Find a creative partner (writer or art director as needed) to work on a joint book. In an agency you won’t be working in isolation so why do so on your book? Having somebody to spar with should help you improve in leaps and bounds.

I feel I improve my ideas on another draft of my book and then the amount of we’ve pursued other candidates letters I get prove otherwise. I really don’t have the time, money, or patience to go back to school for 2 years to do this or something else. There seem to be zero good options right now to get back in the game unless another third tier agency shows interest. I thought my last agency would be a bridge to something better but I was let go not long after I began.

Well, here’s my advice. Get any job, pay the debt. Heck, move in with your parents so you can pay the debt faster. While you are doing that, work on your book. Reach out to people and work with them to fix your book. If you need some help, check out this program: https://stepintotheworkshop.com

Happy to give notes

My husband has ~6 years of experience (2 yrs midsize PA plus various industry roles) so the senior title is low but have heard you have to take a step down in title to work at Fortune 25 companies. He likes the offer but not sure if he should negotiate for more because it’s expected?
