Have an interview for a federal job. Would it be ok to ask if there's an expected timeline for their decision at the end? I really want this position, but I don't want to hold off on other things if it'll take months for them to finalize selection.

It really depends with government. If the group is trying to fill an outstanding vacancy it may not be long. I see nothing wrong with asking when do you expect to make a decision by? I asked this one time and they actually said to me well what’s your timeline. I gave them my timeline and they worked around that. It was a govt contractor job though.

Thanks for the feedback! I think they're interested in getting this position filled due to changes happening quickly at the agency, but it did take ~6 weeks to hear about an interview after the posting closed and another 4 weeks between then and the actual interview. I'd hate to wait another 6+ weeks to hear anything when I really want out of my current position.

It will take months

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power.

I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about.

However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?
