Best non-investing role at a PE firm?
Hi All,
Need suggestions here. Please help me out. I was interviewed with IBM and got selected. Waiting for offer letter. Meanwhile got selected in another company and got offer too. Put down my ppr. Offer from another company is way beyond than IBM almost 22% more in terms of fixed. Now I’m confused that once IBM releases their offer then should I ask them to match with my holding or not ? Will they consider for negotiations? What’s your thoughts? IBM

I’d pass. I joined a ‘boutique’ of <20 which is part of a much bigger advisory firm and some big negatives:
- weak project pipeline
-lack of breadth of work
- lack of structure for new hires
I personally think it’s quite worrying when the brand name of your company doesn’t really count for much in a space like consulting. This doesn’t apply to all boutiques but the big 4/MBB wouldn’t go anywhere near some of the work that my team pitches for..

C1 - thanks for the insights! Are you still with the firm? What made you join in the first place?
Boutique of <20? I don’t think it qualifies as boutique then. Why would you take such risk for just 10%?
OP - I joined as an entry level grad about two months ago. I think I bought into the whole story that they pitched me about competing with the big 4 but offering more responsibility and exposure. I also didnt grasp just how small the team was. I’ve decided to go back to law school in Sept so just going to do one year and bounce. If I wasn’t doing that, I’d be trying to exit ASAP.
A boutique of 10 people is a huge risk and I wouldn’t do it in your late 20s. One partner leaving could leave the firm underwater fast.
