Friends - I am looking for the perfect fit for a Manager role on my team! The right candidate has experience with measurement of owned social channels, influencer and earned. Bonus points if you have social listening experience or you love to stroll the isles a certain retailer when you’re feeling sad.

i'd say do it, was in the same boat as you, doing MMM but turn to data engineer
Pros: people always need data engineer/automator and you got a chance to build stuffs, id thats something you like
Cons: less client facing, and much more technical. Might gets boring if you're not into programming or data modelling
I’ve pivoted between roles of data science and data engineering and now I had an I depth understanding of both. Studies say having a range of experience leads to more creative problem solving and deeper understanding of your job.
I eventually decided I enjoy data science the most. But I’ve managed projects and teams of data engineers as a result of my experience.
As long as you are learning new skills [on the job] you are growing your career.
FWIW data engineers are more easily outsourced and in marketing those roles are being actively deprecated in favor of automation and offshoring.
But if you don't like the client facing side of agency life it can help. Also will set you up to pivot out of the agency world more readily if that is what you want.
Awesome insights. Thank you so much for your input!
What kind of engineer?
Data engineer
@OP. Also second Y&R1’s position to move over to data engineering. You will learn skills that will support analytics so if you want to go back, you will have a wider lens of the function. My only concern is the industry’s common disregard to invest in such skills due to account FTE staffing schemes.
You have to ask to clarify what your responsibilities are. Two roles one salary, umm no! I get these are tough times with limited staff and layoffs but you need to know what you are responsible for so you can manage work life balance. Understand your workload and know how to gauge timelines/deadlines and prioritize, only so much can be done before burning out.
My two cents: if you don’t own/lead your projects, try to understand the limits of the decision maker’s technical knowledge and method of agreeing to projects/work. I have dealt with countless leads who overpromise completed work to be delivered by their direct reports like we have unlimited time or magic powers but does not know what it is, how to do it or if it is even possible.
