I’ll give the opposite perspective as D1.
I went from EY as a staff to a local firm as a senior. I love it. We have interns year-round so there’s always someone below me to do minor stuff. The smaller firm fits my personality better. I’m more comfortable here because I know everyone and I like the small business/individual work a lot more than the Private Equity tax work I did at EY.

I left EY for a local firm as a 3rd year Senior Manager. It's not always unicorns and rainbows, but I work about 300 hours less/year, am not expected to be available at all hours of the day, don't travel, and have way less stress. Yeah, I do more of my own work, but the trade off was worth it.
It does but it's about trade offs. The work is not as interesting, but it's way less stressful than the $50B+ transactions I would work on. I do more prep and detail managing projects. The only downside that is really hard is not having a team of experts I can call for help.
I have worked at a boutique firm of 12 people, another with 30, a regional firm with about 120, large regional with 3000 and Big 4. What it really comes down to is what type of clients you enjoy working with and the team you work with and where you can find those. Also, consider what your pet peeves are and whether you can accept the things you can't change. I worked the same number of hours at different sized firms. For me, hours didn't change until I moved to OR from So Cal, but different firms have different expectations so it is good to ask.
