Have any of you regretted exiting too early from PA?

Yes and I went to a new firm after 3 months because I didn’t like industry. However the old PR comment “you will make more in PA”doesn’t generally fly anymore. The road to the top levels are just as fierce in PA now as industry and the pay in industry with perks and benefits can be just as good as public if not better. Time PA had a face lift. It’s not the PA of the 1980s any longer. Rewards and accomplishment recognition needs to be faster and more frequent at lower levels or PA will not continue to get the younger staff. However, recognize success and achievement is not a 9-5 endeavor in either Industry or PA. Much success always takes hard work.

You generally do make more in PA though? Maybe not the year when you leave for a pay bump, but folks in PA get around a 10% pay bump every year, and close to 20% in promotion years. Young people don’t join PA because of the big salary up front. They join because they understand the long term prospects. There aren’t many industry jobs where your salary doubles in 5-6 years.

Exited as a 2nd year and knew within a week I had made a mistake. Came back to PA less than 5 months later. Still here....

They answered based on their experience, which is what the question asked. Not sure why your understanding was that their answer served as an all encompassing answer for everyone that has ever left PA.

I went to industry after 2 years at a 40 person PA firm doing primarily audit. I lasted one year, but I knew it wasn't for me after a month. The politics, repetitive work (monthly, quarterly half year, end of year...), all about flowing up the messaging on results - I just didn't enjoy the work. It is a different world being a cost center instead of a revenue center. Been back in public at a good sized regional firm for almost 5 years now, no intention of ever going back.

This very much mirrors my experience leaving and returning to PA. I like that you bring up the difference between being a cost center vs profit center. That was a huge takeaway for me as well and one that’s really hard to explain to people who’ve never worked in industry before. I, too, came to the conclusion that I have no intention of going back to industry. I enjoy the challenge of my work, the higher pressure and project based work is more suited to me personally, and I have no interest in ever being back on the client side of things again.

Exited as a Manager. Wish I’d left sooner.

likehelpful

Why’s that? I just made Manager but ready to chill in industry after this busy season.

Yes. 15 years later went back to PA after realizing the C suite offices and even Finance Director positions in Industry required just as many hours as PA.

likehelpful

Nope. I actually work less slightly in PA and make more. Nature of the job and I knew what I signed up for when I chose accounting as a major.

Am looking for something I can study and stick with it long run. Thanks 😊.
