Have any of your schools discussed the idea of live streaming your classroom? How would you feel about that?

Our district is planning on doing this for all grades. Teachers are especially concerned about what this will be like for primary grades. There are so many issues to consider from privacy to sticking to a strict schedule to the amount of time students at home will need to be on a screen... the list goes on

While I don’t teach at the front of the room, due to Covid, kids will not be able to gather in groups or pairs. I make it clear from day one that there is certain behavior that won’t be tolerated in my class, and discipline problems are minimal. I’m not concerned with what parents see or hear, either. Kids will say inappropriate things because they’re kids—so what? If the camera is focused on me for the most part it shouldn’t be a problem. As far as other teachers using my room, I don’t get to dictate that. Most teachers don’t. Just have to sanitize.

I don’t have any issues with it. I’m used to having people walking in and out all the time. So having someone always watching wouldn’t be unusual.

My district is not doing it but I would not be okay with it. It’s a privacy issue for the other students as well.

Those kids would just have to be placed outside of the camera lens area. I’ve had my room video taped in the past for a study I did with Texas A&M, and any student that could not be photographed just sat outside of the area the camera caught.

I think it’s a great idea. Kids who can’t return to school can still sit in on the class. We are discussing using it.

Not anyone can join. They have to have the link, and then they have to be approved to join by the person hosting the zoom meeting.

No we have traditional, blended (so kids can do extracurricular activities) and virtual (stay at home and no activities). However this is with the option to adjust as any need arises.

Less than 4 weeks until we start and my school has still not released a plan. As far as we know it’s business as usual without any back up plans or virtual options. Very frustrating!

If only me & camara crew great privacy issues for students

I would prefer to in-person teaching right now. And make sure your Principal does not let anyone else use your room! Look at the three poor ladies in Arizona, they were teaching summer school, sharing a room, and one of them died.

My district has said we are doing this. We will have a mix of students in class and at home. The teachers will video their lessons as they are teaching, and students at home can watch in real time and ask questions. Students that can’t log on during the class time will be able to watch it later.

Not really sure. I would think it would be kind of chaotic.

I’m looking for a camera to record as I teach because of possible quarantine. Ideas?

Zoom & Google Meet are the ones I use. All students have access to view after our class; anytime they want. Some just like the review or seeing themselves later.

I haven’t heard a thing yet. Not a peep. Interesting idea of live streaming. I thought maybe I could have a google meet on the smart board so the in school students can see the at home students.

My class did a full Google Meet every morning during virtual learning this spring.. They each have a Chromebook @home. This fall I’ll do our class meeting on my Google Meet/ActivBoard so everyone in & out of class to see. It didn’t work well for me doing curriculum teaching with all, usually ActivBoard, Powerpoints & many videos I’d show, the kids couldn’t see or hear. Test it out....I wasted a lot of time preparing for lessons I could never use. Lesson learned for me :) those could already be fixed by now.

I think it's fine as long as the students' parents sign permission slips and parents who want to protect their child's privacy can keep them off camera. The camera should be focused on the teacher and board.

Our lessons were sent to each classes students/parents/admin via emails with Google classroom/google meet. Would those lesson live streaming be able to be viewed by anyone???

https://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html Our understanding is that FERPA restricts our ability to publish or stream if the students names/likeness are included, as they would be in a recorded meet.

It does not affect FERPA. If a parent does not want their child’s picture, or in this case their child in video, they just sit outside the lens cone. Their name and attendance are not protected under FERPA, so you calling on a child during video is just fine.

I want to do it for my special language immersion program which will likely have virtual and f2f students, but we aren’t sure if it’s possible with the school tech or if it’s even legal

I personally wouldn’t want to be live streamed all day. Maybe I would feel different if I taught secondary and only did one or two different courses...But I’m self-contained in 4th. That would mean being on live stream nearly all day. I agree with the teacher who found this to not be effective during remote. Even if they couldn’t interact, we all know when the kids are at home there’s lots of distractions, and I suspect they wouldn’t get a lot out of it. Recording lessons and making them part of assignments in platforms like Google Classroom, Seesaw, Canvas, etc. makes more sense. That way students can go back and view again if needed.

I’d be fine with it. It would give my at home students an option to hear the class and hear questions from students. Since my school has still not released a plan, and I go back August 10, I think this would be beneficial.

A friend of mine said her district was having them use a webcam on the teacher during direct teach for distance learning students to access. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is there anyone that is teaching from home and your students have returned to school? How did you get permission to do that and how does that work with kids in the classroom? I am guessing there has to be an adult in the room while the students are in there but is there another teacher during their planning or do you have to get a sub? Our reentry has been delayed and I am working with HR to try and stay home while students aren’t there but it looks like I’m going to have to take some Parental Leave once students do return because there is not a plan otherwise.
