My doctor didn’t have me fast for the 1 hour, so I had to do the 3. Not gonna lie...prepare yourself for a looong time in the office (time just crawled for me), and a long time having not eaten. I did end up passing out at the last blood draw...not trying to scare you, just being honest. At that point I hadn’t eaten in 16 hours and the office was pretty hot (it was June/July in DC). I ended up failing, but like people said above, it’s nothing you did! Some people’s pancreas just doesn’t ramp up production like is needed in the third trimester. It took a while for me to accept that. The diet was no fun but not terrible, definitely manageable! And I had a healthy normal size baby girl
Coach
I failed both - the diet sucks but you find whats works for you. In the end it was my hormones and not diet that was doing me in. By my final months I had to give myself insulin shots. After baby was born I went back to normal and my son was fine too.
The three hour test itself sucks badly. I thought I was gonna pass out by the third hour. You have to fast so schedule it first thing in the morning. Then have something immediately ready after the test (my husband brought me a whopper right after).
You will be there for 3 hours and you cannot leave so bring a book, tablet, or something to keep you occupied. Also due to covid see if they can put you in a private waiting room in between tests.
Good luck!
I failed the one hour and passed the 3. Just want to say though that it’s not really “failing” and it’s not bad per se if you don’t pass. Nothing is wrong with your body. Your doctor is just trying to make sure you and your baby are as healthy as possible!
Thanks EY3, yeah logically I know I shouldn’t feel bad but it’s just that you sometimes feel your body isn’t upto the mark even though it’s literally growing another human and that’s marvelous
Thanks ladies. I thought the 3 hour has 4 sections? Fasting, hour 1, hour 2, hour 3
I am pretty sure that A TON of women fail the 1 hour test which is why many places have switched to jumping directly into the 3 hour. It’s a bit more accurate. Good luck!
I was high risk, so my OBGYN requested that I do the glucose test twice. The first time I passed the 1 hour. When it came time further into my pregnancy, I failed the 1 hour, and had to do the 3 hour. I was on track to pass the 3 hour (I only had the last of the 4 draws left), but ended up being sent to the hospital because my blood pressure had been rising like crazy over the last few weeks and at that appointment it was alarmingly high. When I got to the hospital, I found out I was heading down the route for pre-eclampsia and I to deliver early.
I never did finish my 3 hour test. Funny story- It was during the 3rd draw that the tech said "well, looks like this will be the last one we do, since you're heading off to the hospital" I was shocked and had no idea what she was talking about (the OBGYN and Nurses hadn't made their way down to lab to tell me yet that they were concerned). Seeing the lab techs face when she realized I didn't know still makes me chuckle (in hindsight... in the moment I called my husband crying and panicked), I've never seen someone try to back peddle their statement so fast.
I was fortunate that I was 36 weeks and it wasn't any earlier!
I failed the 1 hour with both my pregnancies and passed the 3 hour both times with flying colors. It is very common to fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hour. But if you do fail the 3 hour (a) you want to know so you can take precautions with your diet and check your sugar and (b) it is in no way due to anything you did - gestational diabetes is due to your body changing how you metabolize sugar as a consequence of the pregnancy. Either way, you will be just fine.
OP what you ate the day before shouldn’t interfere with results, and as they said above, you shouldn’t even try to change your diet to pass it (you want it to accurately reflect what you and the baby are exposed to). Best of luck in the 3 hour one! Lots of positive stories here!
Yes! I failed the one hour and got really nervous about the 3 hour just like you, but I passed. It’s relatively common for women to fail the 1 and pass the 3. Good luck!
Well I did have some cake the day before so that’s on me
Plus I check my fasting blood sugars once every week in the mornings using a glucometer and they come out Normal
Anyway fingers crossed and hope for the best
I started my pregnancy overweight yes but during the course of my pregnancy I’ve gained just about 5 pounds. So I’ve really kept it in control as much as I can. I’m now in my 26th week.
Thank you!! Hope I don’t have to take it but if I do, it’s fine!
Failed the 1 hour test and passed the 3 hours test with both my pregnancies. For the second 3 hour tested, I only failed 1 section and was borderline on another. My OB just told me to limit carbs and sweets and didn't diagnose me with gestational diabetes.
I had the same situation. I was really bummed when I failed the first one but my OB told me not to worry because I passed the second one.
Thanks ladies! Just had the 3 hour today and wasn’t as bad as I thought. The nurse thought I was doing pretty well as compared to some other women she’s seen before haha
But the no water during the test rule was so 🤢 results will be out soon 🤞🏽
