Very, you learn so much more and actually get more respect. DM me if you need any tips.
LOL @Merkle1 trying to proclaim greater intelligence while misspelling “know”.
Depends. Media only shops are all about margin and efficiency. Can be incredibly boring if you’re more interested in the creative aspect of media (comms planning). Media only shops are notoriously understaffed. You’ll learn a lot of the media basics and be valuable when the client eventually pulls it in house as is trend.
it totally depends on the shop, as long as you do a variety of things (industries, goals, etc.) and work with decent budgets you can learn a lot at a media team within a full service agency!
Not at all. Those ppl no less than they think
I started at a full service (smaller) agency in media but recently switched to a media only agency. I got all the understanding of media basics needed from the full service shop and it actually gave me a great understanding of advertising as a whole since I got to work directly with other disciplines. For media basics I wouldn’t say one is necessarily better vs the other. The nice thing about media only shops is they are more likely to be larger agencies & have a wide range of clients, so there is more opportunity to move around & work on different stuff with different people, which is where a lot of the "advanced” media knowledge comes from.
I’m doing it the other way around now and it’s a real struggle to get people to understand how media works and to champion its usefulness. I can’t imagine fully understanding the media business without working in a media-centric place.
A little late to the party, but a lot of good info here. This business is all about the people you are working with. You can learn just as much at a “full service” agency if you have media experts that have kept up with the industry; however, majority of the better media folks are attracted to media focused agencies- at least in my experience.
If it’s time to make a move look for a media centric shop to diversify experience. Learn what environment you like better and more importantly can do well in for yourself and the company.
@VP1 I know that!
Do what makes sense to you. You’ll get further if you’re in a place you can do your best work & grow. Go or stay where you are inspired and people are interested in helping you grow
