No. Do not tell him until you are resigning - there is literally no upside for you. I get that you don’t want to leave him at short notice but that is of the firm’s doing, not yours (they could have put you on 3 months’ notice when you signed up…).

Makes total sense, thank you!

It’s not your fault your firm is understaffed. And frankly, while I’m sure this partner is a great mentor, he’s clearly squeezing you dry such that all your work will fall on him and not another associate. In other words, he could prevent this by hiring another associate, having you work less, and taking less profit home. Nice guy, sure, but you’re still being exploited.

I wouldn’t tell anyone until you have an offer in hand. Then try and work out a transition plan that helps your old firm.

like

Triple the pay?! Don’t tell anyone you’re interviewing. Only say something when you have a firm offer that you accept. If you want to make it up to them, give them longer notice as long as your new employer agrees.

Don’t be naive. Mum’s the word til conflicts clear.

No. Firms do a great job of making you feel irreplaceable when you’re working, but you’re not. You’ll be replaced faster than you think and your matters will keep moving along as if nothing happened.

like

Just negotiate a start date with the new employer and give more notice to the one you’re leaving. Prepare transfer memos for any active work and files that are clear and can be easily given to someone to take over the work you’re doing. Don’t say anything until you have a signed offer but you could definitely make the transition as easy and seamless as possible if that will be helpful in maintaining the relationship. If the new firm wants you, they’ll wait an extra 2 weeks and you can give a months notice and get everything well-prepared. There’s no upside to you telling them you’re interviewing at that salary bump- the current firm would maybe offer you something to stay if the difference wasn’t so huge but I doubt they’ll match a 3x (I’ve never seen it) and it sounds like maybe you’re ready for a change.

Do not say anything until you clear conflicts and background check

Absolutely not. I know where you’re coming from because I felt similarly about leaving the partner I worked with at my old firm. But if you tell them and don’t get the job it’ll have a significant impact on your relationships there…especially if you’re at a small to midsize firm where partners seem to care more about loyalty.

Triple the pay? Do you have work/life balance now or are you just being underpaid?

Before you make the jump, seriously consider if your WLB will change. You always read here about associates in big law hating it despite making bank.

Don’t feel bad and don’t say anything. I drove myself crazy trying to ensure a smooth transition while I was interviewing because mostly I didn’t want to stick my junior with a mess. I think that was helpful but in retrospect I should have jumped ship years before.

Do what’s best for you- the people who really knew me well knew that I was leaving for a better opportunity and they didn’t stand in my way. They weren’t excited about finding someone new or transitioning work but they knew that I was not happy. I stayed as long as I did for those people. I kept thinking the money would follow. It wasn’t terrible but honestly even though I’m working just as hard if not harder at my new place, pay increase was like 35% and partnership opportunity information is 1000x more transparent.
