If either would be better than now, then go for it. That firm you like is not a for sure offer.
... things are on hold. The other firm is less $/lower ranked, but higher than my current firm (which is a disaster), and I have Super Day (virtual) this week. Do I proceed with my interview this week or decline, knowing my preference for the other firm (despite not having an offer)? Frankly, either would be a better career move and situation than my current firm.
If they’re expected to be stable, it could be a good move. You could also interview down the line for the position on hold. Anecdotal question: what is the ranking for firms? I guess it depends on your industry..
Definitely go for the interview. Having an offer and not accepting it is better than not even trying. If the other progresses in a few weeks: good, you‘ll be more confident in negotiations. If it doesn‘t: also good as you improved your current situation.
Go for the interview. It’s not a valid choice until you have an actual written offer on hand. Don’t assume you have it in the bag
