Have been pinged for a possible role as Director of Operations at a promising looking startup with a 50%% pay increase & equity. It looks like an amazing opportunity.. but my husband and I have just started trying for our first kid, and I'm not sure about leaving the stability and benefits of Big 4, even though I feel like I have run out of career growth here. Has anyone changed jobs at a similar point, or worked at a startup as a new mom, that might be able to share perspective or opinions?

Newly expecting mama here. Do you have the offer or just got invited to the interview? If it is interviewing, it never hurts to talk. Also are you pregnant or just starting to try? If you have the offer and you’re pregnant, that’s one thing. But if you don’t have the offer and aren’t yet pregnant, I’d encourage you to go through the process. You might not get the offer at all, and even if you do, it is not uncommon for it to take 6-12 months to get pregnant. The only things I’d consider are insurance and finances. If your husband has access to a commercial insurance plan that you could join if you were pregnant and something blew up at this start up, all good. If not, maybe something to explore. On the Finances note, if you and hubs have 6-12 months of emergency fund in cash or have family members who can help you if you get in a jam, then you’re likely good. Also doesn’t hurt if you’re okay saving the difference between your old and new salary for awhile until you figure out if the startup is for you.

Glad to be helpful. As someone who works with nothing but men, I get this whole thing is an art and a science (I’m early enough along that I’m still sneaking to prenatals 😂😂😂), but even as a woman of color, I reflect a lot in Sheryl Sanderberg’s iconic advice in Lean In of “Don’t Leave Before You Leave” and tried to maximize every professional moment before my baby was conceived and am trying to hold my own (as much as baby permits) in this pregnancy. Hopefully, you’ll find the right balance for you and your family.

Definitely interview!! Ignore the issues for now until you have an offer in hand I hope to see you back here soon asking the same question with an offer! In which case there are a number of things to consider (pay, risk, role, growth, maternity leave, insurance, etc.), all of which you can ask about with an offer in hand Don’t lose out on a potentially great opportunity because you would like to be pregnant one day soon. Sometimes job processes and fertility processes take a lot longer or go a different route than expected

Yay!!! Congrats!! Ok so next steps: - Negotiate the salary, as you should with any job no matter what - once negotiated to a point you would accept (or during that process), ask about benefits as well (401k match, PTO, maternity leave policy and eligibility). You should ask about these anyway - decide if you want the job or not - if you need to be employed there for 12 months first to get the mat leave, that’s when I would talk to whoever you’re negotiating and say “I really want to work for you, but unfortunately I found out literally this week that I’m pregnant. Is there an option to be eligible before 12 months? If so I’d accept now.” if they say no they suck, but maybe someone else has advice if they say no. Mine would be you don’t want to work for a company that wouldn’t give you mat leave 3 months early - if you get mat leave immediately, I would accept and not tell them until the 12 weeks standard date Curious what others think!

Go for it! The best thing that could happen is you get a job offer, and after that the worst thing that will happen is you have a decision between two good choices.

May I ask how you asked the recruiter to reveal the pay and equity at early stage of interview?

"Do you know what compensation range they're working with and what level of equity is being offered?" She gave their $ range and bonus potential, didn't know the equity level but they've done a Series A, no VP levels between Director and Founder, and around 60 employees, so probably around 0.2-0.5%

Received MBB offer, which I’m very grateful for. I have a medical degree with some work experience. I want to stay in healthcare. I like pharma/biotech, provider systems but also early stage healthcare investing. Certainly open to consulting long term. Few Qs: is the promotion pipeline any different for advanced degree folks? What sort of exit opps would be available to someone like me post MBB? Would my skill set/knowledge base be uniquely sought after, or not really? Thank you for your help!

Are there any CA family law firms looking to contract out work (legal research, drafting briefs, disclosures, forms, discovery, etc.)? I have over 6 years of experience and am well-versed in family code and case law. (My attorney is on family leave so we don't have the workload I'm used to right now, and my husband might be switching jobs with a pay cut, so it wouldn't hurt to earn some extra money.)
