Have gotten feedback from a Partner who is best in class in client relationships that I sound too serious (unhappy) when I introduce myself on calls. Any tips on how I can improve the tone of my voice to sound more friendly? I have a deep voice which doesn’t help 😅 This seems to have become an issue only post-Zoom world

Tell your partner "maybe I am unhappy" and let us know how they respond.

I try to smile on calls even when video is turned off. It seems to help.

Lol, and yet the official party line is "bring your authentic self to work"

I sound too peppy, happy, and junior apparently I need the opposite advice

Just own it. I have the same issue, here’s what I do: When the camera is off, you can say something like “you can’t see me now, but I am very happy/delighted/whatever to talk to you about xyz” When your camera is on: “It may not look like it, but this is my happy face. Very similar to my unhappy face, I know. This is due to years of professional poker playing...” And during conversations, be explicit about what you like (simply saying “I like it” is enough). Good luck ✌🏽

I’m not sure what you do, but you could add a rhetorical phrase; Hi, how is everyone today? or Hi everyone, great weather we had this weekend, it was nice to get out and take the kids to the park.

Also, my humor usually has a sarcasm with a half smile to show I’m joking. That doesn’t translate well to calls so I try to say jokes in a laughing tone or chuckle after. Sounds weird typing it out, but it has helped.

Record yourself. This is how I practice for major presentations. Helps you truly hear yourself and in the pre-covid days, see yourself, and any mannerisms you might have.

Fake it ‘till you make it.

Ever see Office Space? I think you need to add a few pieces of flair to your Zoom call attire.

Stand up and smile.

Smile when you talk. Even if it’s on the phone and no one can see.

You probably sound bored and monotone. I agree with others that you can smile while talking which is a natural way to add energy to your voice. If it’s about content, listen to others on your calls and compare style.

I am not sure of your gender but in my own experience (F) I've gotten numerous criticism on my speaking voice ranging from "too deep, not friendly" to "too high/ditsy"/"your voice goes up at the end of sentences and makes you sound unconfident". It was hard for me to find a good medium. If you need to add some fun to your voice, smile while you talk, maybe look at something funny just before the call. Try to think of the people on the call in a more personal way like you would talk to a friend.

inhale a bit of helium right before speaking

Record yourself and listen to it. Great way to get outside-in perspective

Just pretend you’re happy.

Maybe thrown in a fun fact?

Just say: GGGGOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDD MMMMMMOOOOORRRRRNNNNNIIINNNGG VIETNAM! It breaks the ice every time

Help. My supervisor and I work closely together on our project. Partner and SM have told us directly they want me more visible, to build a brand with client, etc. But when I raise my hand to take things on (drive meetings, sub initiatives etc), manager refuses to give up any of the “higher visibility” work so that, in his words, he does not risk himself falling out of the spotlight, he wants to be the “go to”. It’s not that I am not capable (lots of great feedback from him and Partner/SM) -

I have two contract offers: One is about Data Management/Quality project for 6 months, the pay is 5000£ per month, the other is product data scientist for an early stage startup based in San Francisco for 4 months, the pay is a lot lot less (less than 1000£ per month). Tbh, I am not a big fan of data management, and I totally see myself doing product analytics which is becoming a hot skill in DS field. Is it stupid to turn down the first offer and accept the second one? I would love some advice

Friend wants to join consulting for the pay. I don’t believe she has the aptitude or energy for it. We worked together in a much slower industry, and even there she complained of being overworked.
