Have had a lot of friends in Big 4 tech consulting transition to “solution engineering” in industry. Is this description accurate?

Yea. Used this role to transition to SWE.

Pretty much. It is not just present certain solutions, but also have a wider understanding of the entire customer ecosystem to ensure the products you're positioning add proper value. If it is Cloud world, you'll have to work on consumption too. Can't just sell and walk away, cuz it is easy to switch cloud providers (as compared to on-prem systems). Other tasks include creating POC's, responding to RFx's etc. Source: past life

What do you do now?

As a current solutions architect with presales. Yes. However that definition is a good overview but there’s a lot more nuance and detail depending on what exactly it is

Solution engineers bonuses are really good also

is this commission based like a regular sales role?

At my tech company we don't have a personal sales quota but rather an org quota. If the org as a whole hits its numbers than all of its pre-sales solution architects will get our bonus (paid out quarterly) which is equal to 25% of our base.

Yup

One other component that’s missing in the description is their technical depth to partner with the product team in helping the customer smoothly onboard from a technical perspective. They often write technical documentation that is used in sales settings and are often expected to have a decent level of coding skills. Think of it as the technical bridge role between pure sales and product/engineering, who is commercially savvy.

Yes this is what I do at AWS

Interesting. A lot of these folks were the same people going through casing / info sessions for Bain/BCG in UG. Are these roles largely commissioned based like typical sales?

Traditionally yes. But not as dependent on commission as sales reps. I’ve seen SW sales reps get 100% of their salary when hitting goals, then hit accelerators when they pass goals. While solutions architects, or sales engineers, more commonly you’ll see bonus in the 25% of salary, as someone mentioned. It’s really varied. But either way, the good sales roles you’ll have a decent base to start—$130k+. This is what I’ve collected over the past year in trying to transition into sales.

AWS is not commission based, I know GCP is. Not sure about Azure

Not commission based (in general).

Yep, nailed it.

Have two offers and unsure which to take. Ex Big 4 and have done software startups since. Option 1: Director role back in Big 4. Good package. Good fit with my area of expertise, focusing on tech solutions and partnering with startups. Working across all industries and clients. Option 2: Big Tech/GAFAM (level = L6 google/e6 FB/65 Microsoft, which I’m told is Director equivalent) Even better package. Account Technology Strategist. Less client diversity but using breadth of their tech.

I distinctly remember as an Analyst on my first project telling my PPMD and SM that I hated PPT and excel, and thought it was the stupidest thing ever that we had to align everything and storyboard. Thankfully they laughed and didn’t roll me off. Now I’m in industry corporate strategy and teaching my new analysts how to create slides and she said the same thing😬. Funny how things change, and now I realize that those consulting skills are more important as you move up in corporate America
