What do you think helped change your mindset? I’m trying to become more thoughtful and appreciative
OP, all joking aside a lot of it is perspective, and I have to coach my junior staff on this a lot. I get all worked up plenty but often times it's just taking a step back, realizing you have all the tools you need in this job to be fairly happy.
Will you be doing your life's best work? Crap no.
(which is incredibly hard to get your head around if you're a workaholic)
But it's an opportunity to be happy without really having to take enormous risks or face serious adversity, and you can always find some way out.
It's not that bad. It's just very easy to get institutionalized into the depressed salaryman mindset we all love.
Hey D1 - happy to hear it. Honestly, I don't know. The year started out in a pretty bad place and I was working through a lot of stuff - both professionally and personally. But then a couple of weeks ago it was like something just switched in my brain and I realised I'm in a really good place in life, and for the first time (I'm 27 and female so imposter syndrome in way high) I felt like I actually have skills and experience that people value and want to pay for. It was weird. But it's given me a lot of confidence that somehow otherwise objective data points (e.g. feedback, performance reviews etc) had failed to ingrain in me. And that has made me feel good about myself, and consequently about other people too - because I think a lot of the reason why many of us feel this kind of... General malady is because we're constantly comparing ourselves to others, and focusing on what we don't have, instead of seeing and appreciating all the great things we do have and have accomplished and will continue to accomplish. Self love, essentially. I hope you find it too. I'm always happy to chat if you want to drop a burner!
I also spent all of last week high af so that maybe helped 🤷♀️
How do I sign up for one of these brain tumors?
I ❤️ OP. Comparison is the thief of joy.
I’m 42, been doing this for a long time....and this was just what I needed today. Thank you for sharing OP. It reminds me of who I want/need to be.
Thanks everyone! I realise this is a departure from the usual Monday morning post and people might be sceptical or curious. Or probably think I'm crazy. I genuinely am just trying to be a good person, or at least a better person, to myself and those around me. One little thing I've started doing recently is, whenever possible, I thank the driver of my public transportation before I disembark. It's a small gesture, but it's genuine from me and is probably valued highly by them = excellent ROI.
If anyone here wants to chat more about this, or anything, drop me a line - fishburner18@gmail.com. Better take advantage of it now in case M1 is right and I am still just 🎐 😂
I’ve had a similar epiphany and mind shift recently as well. For me it took losing a loved one to get to this point. It was a really painful process. I questioned why we even have a life when it all ends so abruptly and inevitably one day...it just seems so transient and pointless...and it took getting though the heartbreak to understand that this is really all we have...just the present moment to make a difference, to be happy, to spread some happiness and be a good person. That is really all the time we have and we should use it well. Thanks for this post OP, a good way to start a Monday. And yes, high or not, it is still important that we have a good mindset.
HOW DID YOU DO IT
Yeap, that's a tumor.
Haha, D2 - there's that wishy-washy practice of keeping a gratitude journal, but it surprisingly is quite impactful. I haven't done one in a while, but it's something I would suggest if you want a piece of this "tumor"!
Haven’t smoked but I’m kinda riding the high of wanting to a good human being as well. I think it partly has to do with me joining Deloitte as an experienced hire and not feeling the pressure to compare myself to my peers that I started with from my previous firm and I’ve been doing some pro bono work that’s really changed my perspective on what’s important in life. I’m feeling your vibe OP!
What type of 💊 we talking here OP? I want in
I love this. Thanks for posting positivity
Happy for you, OP.
OP gets to the root cause in her final sentence — you were high AF and probably still riding it. DM me when you are high and you and I can save the world together.
I’m genuinely happy for you OP! We need more people like you
Drop acid folks. You're welcome.
Hubby and I went to bed early, woke up early, had tea and meditated and worked out. I have been dealing with a situation at work that has brought up my desire to be petty and responsive so I sat with some mantras to help me internalize the way want to react instead. I feel like doing the self work makes you feel better and in turn you have more love and kindness to give.
@Pwc2, I literally went through the same to realize life is too short to worry over every single thing. We need to take life as it comes and make the best out of whatever time we are left with :)
I love you OP! I so needed this today. I'm not high (though I got high this weekend too!)
