A high level MD / Director level person who places the request on the behalf of one of their many teams

The one who decides whether you get the job and either pays for it, or goes to the person who pays for it and makes the case that the role needs to exist.

I would argue that when a consulting req is put in, technically the hiring manager is the lead of the practice BUT you often don’t interview with them. The talent team is constantly running reports that analyze market need in relation to attrition. These elements drive the requisition.

Just curious, like you said, in consulting it's the group lead whom you'll likely never work with or even meet. If the hiring manager is your direct manager just feels like alot more added pressure to preform and prove that you're worth the salary lol
Most of the hiring managers I've interacted with have been the direct manager of the role.
