Get a suit

Suit. And you can find a decent suit unless you have absolutely uncommon body proportions or are in the middle of nowhere. If you do go with blazer and a dress, make sure the blazer is structured and it looks like a suit jacket and dress is appropriate - sheath as SC1 suggested. You will 100% need a suit while you’re in school anyway and for every interview you have after school so why not just get one?

Business attire = suit. And I’m sure that a bunch of people here have anecdotes of what they’ve gotten away with in place of a suit, or combos that make them feel just as well put together. But if they specified business attire, that means suit. Think of it this way: can you imagine a setting that required business attire where a man would show up in a cardigan?

like

Agree that suit will be an investment however that's only if you want to work in that kind of world after b school. Just get a nice versatile blazer to go over the dark dress. You can then use it for business casual situations

Is your interview in the next hour...? Are you in Siberia...? I’m assuming no. Go to a mall and get a suit! Even if it’s not an absolute perfect tailored fit, it will be MUCH better than wearing a cardigan. Don’t wear a cardigan

You can definitely find an appropriate, moderately priced blazer that doesn’t require tailoring in time unless the interview is in the next hour. Plus I agree it’s generally good to have a suit in your closet. Not sure what your dark colored dress looks like, but a sheath-type dress could be appropriate as business attire as a worst-case scenario. Though I’d still wear a blazer unless your cardigan is very professional and goes with the dress .

Banana & Ann Taylor suits require very little or no tailoring bc they come in petite, regular, and tall sizes.

You interviewing on campus? I went to booth and was a student interviewer and sheath dress with nice blazer is totally fine.

At the absolute minimum buy a blazer to wear over the dress. J Crew Mercantile (outlet) has decent options for ~$75. Or borrow one from a friend. Please do not wear a cardigan. Suit would be preferred - or said blazer in a punchy pattern/boucle with a pair of trousers that coordinate (both can be bought at Banana Republic) will give you a suit feel without buying a full matched set. That look does NOT translate the same with a basic blazer in one color though.

I found my favorite suit at White House black market - reasonably priced and no tailoring

Thanks all, but unfortunately I don’t have time to get one and have it tailored. I’ll try to find a blazer that doesn’t need any tailoring in the meantime..

I have NEVER tailored

Suits are matching fabric & color. Blazer & pants are different fabric & colors. Former is dressier, and generally what you should wear to an interview unless you know the culture to be very creative or very casual. For an interview, always over dress.

like

Side question - is the main difference between Blazer and suit that suit has a matching pair of trousers(or skirt) and Blazer does not?

I thought a suit refers to both pieces (either blazer plus pants or blazer plus skirt) and the blazer just refers to the jacket portion. I think there might be more nuance to it, especially for menswear, but for women’s clothing I think it’s easier to use blazer as a catch-all.

No cardigan, get a suit!

It may have been noted but my advise is also to stick to black with white. It sounds boring, but a female mentor once gave me that advise, and I keep to it. You can “impress them with fashion” at a later date. No one cares about your color pallet, black with white will always be dressy enough.

In July I missed my promo to SM. A woman has been preferred even if she was underqualified (my MD's words), as at Accenture we have quotas for women. I'm interviewing with Deloitte, they told me I'll help building the practice. In the meantime I was assured by my MD that in December I'll get the promo. I don't really care changing company, even if I've built a network, I don't think I need to wait if I can. Your thoughts?

Made a mistake of moving to US 10 years ago thinking this was the best country! Finally after looking for a good job opportunities for 3 years and several rounds of interviews, moving to Switzerland for good. Living in this country has been hell and for everyone who calls it the best country. God bless you. Good luck everyone living in US. Hope to see y’all never. Also goodbye Daddy D. Thanks for the memories!
