Have taken an unpaid leave to spend time/vacation with family in my home country. It’s caused an issue with my manager which is making me anxious and depressed. How can I compartmentalize my anxiety and be present with family for the next few weeks before going back to the office?

This reaction from your Manager has nothing to do with you and is all about him/her. Because you see such a person may feel that your absence may impede their lifestyle. But, s/he is not the one taking “unpaid” leave which is in essence a sacrifice to spend limited time with your family. And the manager has the company leadership to turn to for help if needed. That is what the leadership does. One beautiful thing about the life is that nothing stays constant (thus smart managers know and plan for this). Even in your case when you return things are likely to look different- maybe your manager is planning to jump jobs, maybe things get reorganized in the office-you know nobody at that company is guaranteeing anything to you including that manager. So enjoy yourself and when you return see if you want to stick around or find something better.

I'm sure I'm not the only one, but the holiday season always makes me feel extra lonely. I don't know why I'm putting this here, but this has been one of the more sane and sensible communities I've been a part of. To all the other folks sailing in the same boat - I see you. It may or may not get better. But remember, you don't walk alone (even if you think you do). Okay, thanks for coming to my TED talk. Happy holidays everybody!

If you could ask for anything at your firm - what would you ask for? Caveat: something that is a stretch but realistic. Background: There is some current turmoil and I have been identified as someone they want to stay through it and wait for it to get better. We don’t have many females at the top. I don’t qualify for equity based on current metrics but the metrics used have lots of room for improvement and the current metrics could be “ignored” for me potentially. (Cont)

I hope everyone at EY will book vacation in November/December to use the accrued hours they EARNED. This PTO thing really is a shame, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the other B4 follow suit. The one thing we all have in common is leadership finding creative ways to screw over employees.

Visiting my SOs family and they have planned for us to drive to another city and spend a couple of nights there and do activities however no one is communicating how much the extra stuff will cost. Mind you the trip is tomorrow and they have known we are coming for a month. Should I ask how much this is going to cost us or do I just wait until someone asks me for money? I am afraid this might be like $1000 expense for us that is just unplanned.

In my late 20's, but I've lived in my current city (nonUS) my whole life. I was really looking forward to moving to NYC and landed a job there earlier this year although I'm still WFH and not in the US yet. A recruiter reached out to me for a new role but it would be in my old city. I'd be pretty fine with both roles themselves. But the NYC one would pay about 140$ TC (not sure about bonus yet, this is a guess), and the non-NYC one would be maybe $25-30 more. Is the $ worth the city sacrifice?
