I’ve done multiple flights with a 6 week old. Honestly they’re easier at that age to fly with. I always do lap infant and bring a boppy on board to nurse. They can sleep on it and sucking on something during takeoff and landing helps their ears. Airlines are usually good about letting you take on extra stuff bc of the baby. I hate heck the stroller and car seat so I have them handy up until boarding and right after we land.
I agree with SM1 - the younger the baby, the easier to fly with. Nursing / bottle at take off and landing are great if you can time it. My little ones took pacifiers so if they were sleeping already, I wouldn’t wake them up to eat. Instead I’d make sure they had the pacifiers in and were sucking it. If not, I’d sort of pull it out or wiggle it around so they’d start sucking on it again. This should help equalize the pressure the same as nursing.
Agree with the suggestion to use a carrier at the airport and check your stroller, car seat, etc. at the check in counter. I also bring our baby Bjorn travel crib and check that since it is so light and compact. Feed the baby during takeoff and landing to help them pop their ears and pray they sleep most of the flight!
If you're going to visit your mom periodically anyway, buy a pack n play or cheap travel crib to leave there. Hauling it through the airport will be a pain. Also good to know, I think most airlines will check car seats and strollers for free without counting towards your luggage. Feed during take off and landing.
We travel a fair amount with our kids. Since the oldest was 3 months. Definitely do a baby carrier and check everything you can. We check travel cribs without issues. At 6 weeks, you should be good - just bring enough formula (if using) for delays, etc, and also in case the baby needs a top-off during takeoff and landing for ears. I agree that people are generally very nice! I’ve found the plane noise acts as white noise
Not that young, but took my 4 month old on a 4 hour flight. We got the baby her own seat and just brought on the car seat, and it was reasonably easy... many infant car seats can be fitted to a stroller (we have a chicco 30 on mountain buggy nano) which can be gate checked. If you do lap infant, you can check the car seat and just carry baby in a baby Bjorn or something. you get a lot of leeway to bring stuff past security with an infant (I took a quart thermos of hot distilled water for formula, and also a bag of cold packs with bottles of refrigerated breastmilk, but you can also bring a coverup to nurse onboard). Is there someone at the destination that you can ship stuff to? If so, Amazon diapers, wipes, formula, and all the bulky stuff to save a trip to the supermarket. If there is not a crib available on the other end, consider investing in a lotus travel crib. We use a baby bjorn crib which is similarly light and portable, but lotus carrying case can also be worn like a backpack whereas BB is handles only.
Also - don’t be afraid to ask for help! Especially if you’re traveling alone. Most people I encountered at the airlines were incredibly helpful - getting hot water to heat bottles, finding a place for your bags, helping with your stroller, etc. If you’re carrying breastmilk, I’d even pack zip lock bags and stop at a bar / restaurant in the terminal and they’d fill it with ice for me no problem.
I always wore my son in a carrier at the airport and tried to check as much as possible (basically the opposite of work life) to make it easier to navigate the terminal and boarding. I found having my hands free was easier than pushing a stroller around. You can check baby items for free on most airlines and we’d jam the car seat and stroller bags full of other stuff
Every hotel I’ve brought the baby too had cribs. Have gate checked the pack n play when staying with family. Though when I traveled alone with baby I actually just ordered a new pack n play to location from Amazon. It was $40 and felt worth not having one extra bulky thing to lug around given all the other baby stuff. I often carry baby in carrier and put luggage on top of stroller/car seat to get around airport then gate check. If your flight isn’t too crowded they will sometimes give you an extra seat even if lap baby if you ask nicely. Definitely take advantage of early family boarding if you don’t have status.

OP, if you’re staying in a hotel, you can request a crib. I did have friends who checked a pack n play so sounds like it can be done!
Have your mom ask around her friends /neighbors too, she may be able to borrow one

They don't charge you to check baby related stuff, so check as much as possible!

Has anyone ever traveled with a pack and play?
She needs a plave to sleep and considering either buying something or checking it Bring it

Agree about the hotel having one. I usually brought my own sheet for it but used the hotel pack n play.
Thanks again! I'm staying with my mom. Thanks for the tip on shipping one there
Yup, flew with mine at 5 weeks, easiest flight with her ever.
