I’ve never been on a PIP, but I came very close to being put on one last summer.

Reasons:

A. I didn’t “take ownership” of my audits
B. Managers continued to step in to get jobs out of fieldwork and to completion
C. I wasn’t great at internal communication

When I had my annual review, my career advisor they let me know about this. The issue in my mind was I didn’t hear about that feedback until six months or so after the fact.

I took matters in my own hands to work my way back, but I think I’ve done enough to change the opinions of everyone in the office and am even being considered for a promotion to manager.

EY4: The negative review and withhold is pretty commonplace here at my firm. I could not have been more blindsided at the time of my last annual review, because one month before that my CA let me know that I was doing okay but needed to take bigger steps to get to the next level. To be honest, I think my CA was even caught a little off guard when the annual round table happened a few days before my annual review. I don’t hold any resentment towards the partners and managers who had that negative feedback because it’s an awkward and tough discussion to have and maybe their communication skills weren’t necessarily good enough to have that conversation at the time.

But I told myself that was the last time that kind of thing was going to happen, because my career was on the line and I wasn’t going out like that. So the first thing I let my CA know after the annual review is that we need to have monthly meetings to discuss feedback from all managers and partners. Thankfully my CA is a straight shooter so they were completely okay with the idea of getting honest feedback often from managers and partners. Doing this has been very critical in my “improvement” over the past nine months.

ASA1: There’s no rating system at my firm, but if there was, I would’ve been well below average as the partner let me know that other first year seniors (I was a third year at the time) were outperforming me. So if you’re average you should be okay, but I wouldn’t rest on my laurels if there’s any cause for concern.

I had one of my seniors on a PIP. It was hard cause the dude had a great attitude. He just didn’t have the skills. Work ethic was there. I liked him. He just couldn’t get things right. He ended up going to industry and had been successful there.

I haven’t seen a senior go in a pip but saw staff 2, staff 3s do that. So far nobody was able to get out of it- they usually just find a new job. Generally, people are not likely to help “coach them out of it”. It’s like a vicious cycle, the staff are discouraged so they don’t put in the effort, the coaches don’t want to deal with coaching so they don’t help out ;( it’s a sad situation. For some reason people on a PIP seem to be held to a higher standard which also puts them at a disadvantage.

The higher standard is 100% accurate. I was put on one as an S3. Long story short, I got chucked under the bus in a real dumpster fire. I didn’t feel like it was going to end. I just left because even after great Snapshot another Snapshot, I was still getting the run around from HR.

I now Work way less, get paid way more. Couldn’t be happier.

I have seen a couple seniors and associates get put on one in my group. Usually happens after they are shuffled amongst many clients and nobody wants to work with them anymore. Once on a PIP, they’re given a time frame to improve (usually a few months) and the people they work with need to give them snapshots every week to see if they “improve”. Most of the people that were put on a PIP in my group quit and went to another big 4 before they were fired. Some tried to stay to see if they could improve but just ended up getting fired afterwards.

Both the seniors ended up at the same firm but only one of the seniors got promoted to manager after a few years at the other firm.

The other senior is still working there but never got promoted.

Yes to both

I’ve seen it twice. In both cases, the Senior left the firm for another job, before getting to the end of the PIP period.

Idk, but I’m guessing they thought it would be best to start fresh with a new team. Tbh, I would probably have done the same.

I was put on a pip after my first year as a senior. It was an awful experience that caused me to have severe depression and anxiety to the point i had a severe panic attack while driving and nearly got in an accident. The whole situation felt like more of a way for management to tell me that they thought I was lazy and that pwc wasn’t the right fit for me. I got out of it but it has soured my opinion of pwc and i don’t trust my upper management any more. I have been looking for a job ever since but haven’t found a good fit yet

I was a 4 rating based on my utilization. This was in July and i got off the pip in august/september. I started looking in january to try to give myself a cool off period

I saw it happen once to a senior. He was put on PIP and got extremely depressed. He tried to fight hard to perform for over a year before management determined he wasn't a fit and fired him. During the year he just worked and worked but got canned anyways at the end.

Thanks I hope so too. I thought he was a nice dude.

PwC2, how did it end? Did your annual rating below 3 the average?

Don’t sign a PIP. They are likely going to fire you after the 2 months. By signing a PIP, you are acknowledging that your performance was below expectations and it’s a way for the firm not to pay severance.

This is not true. Read it first. Signing means you acknowledge you have been informed, not that you agree. And it's silly to even think that if the company thought you were were so bad they let you go that just because you didn't agree that you still get severance

Is it common for a first year to be put on a PIP? I just finished my first busy season and it was a roughly one because my team didn’t have the time to fully explain all my assignments to me and it took some time to get all my work done and I am worried about the yearly review.

I’ve only seen it for first years that blatantly don’t get their work done/lie about getting it done and got caught for it more than once.. which seems fair bc then it’s a ethics issue/grounds for firing
