Have you always been a risk taker? I assume with this job you have to take some calculated risks. Is risk taking a skill that can be developed? If so, how do I go about it?

Yes, it can. I think it’s a lot of it is just experience. After many I’ve been there and done that, you become better at predicting outcome, which is not at all surprising.

The other part is critical thinking. You run scenarios through your head, their impact and it helps you define the worst and best outcomes and where you’re likely to fall.

The last thing I’ll say. It’s not about falling down, because fall you will. It’s about learning from it and getting back up again. So don’t stress over this. You will get there.

This is directed at partners?
I don’t think of partners as a particularly risk-loving group.

Agree with this. One of the positives to me of partnership is that any “risk” I take is backstopped by a profitable enterprise. It does mean upside is limited too, but I’m okay earning a stable 7-figure sum and accepting that it won’t climb into 8 or 9-figure territory.

Most of the risks I take are very much in the lower stakes world. Like, sure… I’ll risk losing some piece of work by playing hardball with a procurement organization. But doing stuff like that becomes almost like muscle memory at some point even if you never got into gambling (I have never gambled in any material way).

Start by taking lower level risks - specifically ones that aren’t monetary. Ask someone out of your league out either professionally or personally. Go volunteer somewhere that puts you out of your comfort zone. You’ll slowly find your risk tolerance will go up and can translate to other areas of life including financial

Do you gamble? How’s your calculated risk taking? Or more simply, do you find yourself thinking about what ifs, rather than how to more often? I know I’m waxing philosophical, but it’s not for everyone, and that’s ok.

No, I do not gamble. I grew up very poor. I simply do not have a tolerance for risks.
I think it might be holding me back in my life and career. I want to get better at it though, hence the question. :)

Depends on what u call risk. I tend to be extremely calculated with decisions and have the ability to do this rather quickly. To others, they view me as a risk taker. I think it's normal because they don't seem like they are risks. Perspective!

I’ve been working at Paycor for about 3 years now under the Implementation department. I love my role but I can’t deal with the clients anymore. I have 9 years of work experience under my belt and want to move into a role more focused on organizational development which is under HR. I obtained my MBA focusing on org dev in 2020 and have been looking for a way to move into that area since. My question is what type of role should I be looking for? The depts are so different and I’m lost.

My ideal industries are cybersecurity, cloud, and foodtech.

Partners - currently I’m struggling to get recognized by the leadership. The role I’m in does not offer visibility to SMs/directors and partners. What are some of the things I can do get visibility?

Is it silly to want to feel valued by my Partner/Practice Leader?

He rewards me well rating/comp-wise, gives me a lot of latitude etc but OTOH I constantly get blown off for check-ins, multiple emails ignored, excluded from some conversations that might be relevant for me, etc.

Maybe it’s just normal Partner behavior and I should grow a thicker skin, but generally feel emotionally disconnected from him and that my portfolio of work is not integral, or is an afterthought, to the practice.
