I have! Spent a few months at my parents’ rent free. Invested some of those savings in the market, which has paid off handsomely.
Using what I saved towards great cooking ingredients, expensive candles, and kitchen gadgets, since I’m a bit of a homebody and love cooking (and it helps compensate for not going out when you can eat well at home and have a large enough kitchen to sustain it).
Haven’t traveled or eaten out at all since March (just takeout once a week or so), so that’s really accelerated savings for me, even if I’m now back in the city and paying $$ in rent. I figure I’m still saving even with the spending on nice things at home if I’m not out and about like I used to be (and I’m being conservative with the pandemic precautions anyway).
I feel like your current spending is probably still less than what you spent pre-pandemic? Do what gives you balance (safely! as you are) and save what you can, but you don’t need to feel like you’re saving 110% if you do have some financial flexibility.

Life is short. Enjoy it while you’re young !
My main hobbies before the pandemic were travel, going to museums, and going to the theater. Any sort of live performance is out - so saving ~$200/month on that and no travel so saving thousands on that. I now take Uber/taxis instead of public transit to go to museums, but that’s only 1-2 times a month. Otherwise, I’ve spent a lot more on books and have subscribed to more streaming services, but otherwise my costs are way down.
I’m outside of the city but still paying rent inside of the city 😣 But that’s incentive to save every penny otherwise. Currently saving about 50-60% of my income
I can’t drive. This means I can’t really spend money. Mostly I have spent more on ordering out.
GD1 why? I am in the city, but why pay two rents?
I’m only paying one rent, and it’s severely under market value. Our office hemmed and hawed about return to office for the first 6 months of COVID so I didn’t feel ready to make a decision to leave a great apartment (and still am not ready)
It’s no more expensive than storing a large 2BR apt’s worth of stuff so 🤷♀️
