I always get a refund. Also who pays their taxes in February? I'll do it at the deadline for max stress
I make sure I get a refund
Why would you want refunds? Don't you realize that means you're essentially giving an interest free loan? I'm tryna figure out what I can do to minimize it
@gs1 better that you have the money than the gov't tho right? so if you are getting a refund file early, if you owe, file late, and during the year take the appropriate number of deductions to minimize both
You did not have enough state taxes withheld.
@op if you work in jersey but live in NYC, you were witheld at Jersey rate, NYC and NY have higher taxes. They charge you for the difference only. My suggestion is to move to Hoboken
I did my taxes yesterday and I did get a federal refund but it wasnt enough to negate the taxes I owed to NY state, so in the end I owe them around ~$600. Can a tax guru tell me what happened here? My annual income for 2016 was ~80K.
^that makes perfect sense. Starting this year I now work in NYC and live in NYC as well, no longer NJ. Does this mean I should be owing less, potentially getting a refund, when i do my taxes next year for 2017?
Would this have an effect if I worked in NJ in 2016 where I paid both NJ and NY state taxes?
