Have you ever accepted a job offer as a candidate(or had a candidate accept your offer of employment as a recruiter/hiring manager), and then rescind? I have 2 opportunities but the timelines are misaligned. I think I'm shortly getting an offer from one while I'm midway thru the process with the other. I don't want to end up in a position of saying yes but then getting a better offer and rescinding. I don't think I can ask for more than a week to think about it. Any advice on best way to handle?

Rescinding sucks, BUT...

You are an at-will employee, and can be let go at any time for any reason (probably). If a better offer comes before you start you tell them that. If you want to let them match it... cool. But if the other place is where you want to work, that’s where you should go.

It’s your life. I know that sounds cold, but things don’t always line up perfectly (like you said).

Yes...I get it. Just so unpleasant to have to do, I'd like to avoid if possible but I'm limited on control in the situation.

Had lots of candidates rescind over the years and honestly I have a moment of ‘ damn it ‘ but I nearly always have a second in mind to offer to. It’s normal. Agree with previous comments- it’s your life and unless you’re saving lives it’s a no harm no foul situation. Take what’s going to be best for you all round and you’ll be the best hire for that firm

like

Totally agree

You have the right to rescind. I used to have a different perspective on this, until I had to let employees go, who had walked away from great opportunities, for us... in other words, the company is going to do what’s best for the company. You should be charting your career path, and then following it.

Tell the opportunity that’s further along that you are very interested in them but there is another opportunity you are equally interested in. Perhaps the first opportunity can wait. You have a lot of power when you are being handed an offer. I feel a lot of people don’t realize this.

like

If they really like you, they’ll hold on. This is the reason I sometimes ask candidates, are you ready to hear an offer from us? If not, I’ll hold back.

I’ve had several candidates rescind their offers. Usually it’s because they’ve found something more aligned with where they want their careers to go or because moving doesn’t mesh well with their family life. Many of my managers try to find ways to persuade a candidate to still accept the offer but they usually have their minds made up. So it’s definitely nothing wrong if you rescind an offer because you’ve found something better. I’ve even had people come and stay 2-3 months and leave because they’ve found a better position.

like

tell the company that's moving slower that you are interviewing and close to an offer your preference would be them but want to get a sense of timing and if you're moving forward

They're aware. I'm just not far along enough with them to make them move it.

How do you ask about WLB in an in-house interview (or do you wait until post-offer) in a way that doesn’t make you look like a slacker? I’m all for working hard (albeit not at a partner’s whim every random night or weekend), but I’m nervous about taking a paycut only to find myself in a role where I work late every night and people don’t take vacations. Maybe I have law firm PTSD but don’t want to make a bad move!

Has anyone done adult teeth straightening in the city? is the in-network cost (approved fee but no insurance coverage) usually the same among different dentists? I had my PHR back in early 2000, then made a career change to a paramedic (I know, right). I called SHRM and they said I'm eligible to test again even though I only currently have 1.5 yrs of HR.

I purchased the online study guide and it seems that HR has gone in a completely different direction - more operations related than employee relations etc.

Did anyone find this online training to be helpful? I test in July, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks - lauren

My 2nd interview with GM, AGM, and HRD started with them unanimously agreeing on my ability to do the job at a high level. After 5 interviews and becoming one of the two finalists. The company decides to offer the job to the other candidate but never let me know. I was waiting for weeks and then decided to ask about my status. I got the "oh we decided to offer the job to someone else" response. I wrote back and said how disappointed I was that no one let me know until I asked.

Question: Did I burn that bridge? How do you think they handled communication and is that even a company I should want to work with?
