Have you ever been passed on for a role by someone who is less qualified and has done less than you in terms of side projects related to the new role ? Seeing this happen over and over again can be crushing, and I'm doing my best to keep doing more projects and build my portfolio, and I try to stay as positive as I can in interactions. What are you advice for how you coped in this type of situation?

Hi! Thanks for sharing this common situation that happens more often than you think. You are not alone. Myself and so many others at previous roles have been passed on for a role for someone less qualified. It’s more of an ego thing because we think we deserve the role. Let me tell you something that is often spoken but never realized how true it is. Everything happens for a reason. Be thankful and grateful for what you have and if that means rejection, use that opportunity as redirection. Since those moments in the past, I have improved my skill set, learned new technology, and garnered a higher salary than my counterparts over the years. It is all about what we do from these crucial learning moments in our career. I hope this helps!

Sometimes it take you finding a better job somewhere else for them to react and panic. Some employers do not value loyalty the right way, they think it means you will accept whatever is coming quietly.

What type of side projects are you doing? Are they what can be classied as promotable side projects? Sometimes we take on side projects that are not moving the needle or considered nice to have. I would also take a look at the people being promoted and see what they are doing different from you. Are they networking more? Building relationships with people in a position to promote you? I’ve been in your shoes and it is not fun, but you must remember that you are your own brand and marketer. You need to be advertising what you are bringing to the table because nobody else will.

Continue to do what your doing and don’t let It discourage you. As bad as It sounds, It usually politics when It comes to choosing who’s best for the role. Your best bet is seeking other companies who would be willing to give you a shot on a new career path. I would say after 3 attempts you know you tried and it’s time to start looking elsewhere.

You probably need to do a mix of the following:

- Make sure your boss is aware of the projects you take on
- Make sure the projects you take on are of actual value and push the company forward
- Ask yourself what skills the people getting promoted have that you don't (or you don't showcase)
- Voice to your boss that you're actually interested in a promotion
- Ask your boss what it takes to get a promotion and collaborate with them to make a plan for it
- Ask your boss why you haven't been promoted yet
- Ask yourself if you actually want a promotion (getting a promotion isn't always what people what, as it usually means a change in responsibilities)
- Look at what skills the role you want to be promoted to actually takes, rather than looking at what improves your current position
- Consider whether you're willing to look outside your current company to go into the role you want - and if so, start looking!

Honestly - sometimes, we think we are more skilled than we are, or at least how we appear. Sometimes, we're not willing to take the steps that will lead to promotions. Sometimes, it's just about visibility. There can be a lot of reasons you're not getting promoted. Promotions also aren't everything - recognition can come in many forms.

Thank you for taking the time to type. I love what you shared and very helpful advice.
To share more about my story: I was hoping for a lateral move. Although they want to promote me to an assistant leadership role, but I've outgrown the type of work our department does, and it's no longer challenging. It just seems moving to the lateral roles in another department has been very hard, whereas others who maybe don't work as hard can easily move over.
I wonder if I've been typecast into this role because those around me see that everything I've been doing shows me as very strong to keep in this department.

I do like the idea of taking on projects that can bring value. You gave me inspiration- perhaps I can think of some projects that can benefit the department I want to move to. This may also help with any potential typecasting.
I also like what you shared about looking into skills in the new role. That too gave me some fodder for thought on what I should pivot the focus of my portfolio too, and what I share in my interview as well.

Great ideas!

Yeah I saw something like that happen once, years ago. I don't know how she did it but I do know that she was taking some Lynda courses (this was back when it was still Lynda lol). They must have been Linda courses for the role she had her eyes on. She was also doing some brown nosing (I caught her red handed. Or maybe I should say "brown nosed".) She got promoted within three months when the company had a policy for a minimum promotion time frame of six months. She was also well connected within the company. It isn't like she knew the CEO or anything but she had some friends in higher places on the ladder than she was in. I was very surprised. I think she went into that role with a plan from the get go. I was happy for her, albeit, a little jealous. Lol.

-ensure you have a positive relationship with your peers, supervisors, and other departments (the more ppl who have positive thoughts about you the better)

-ensure projects are related to the role

-ensure you get a close relationship with the department you want to move to

-during 1on1s bring a list of concerns you may have about your personal development, to help your growth

-never bring up problems without potential solutions

-sometimes it's not you, it may be the culture. But it's most beneficial to focus on what you can control

I felt the same way at my last role at Tesla. New people getting hired in at higher salaries, promoted before me, etc. I made sure to get an outstanding review on my last two quarters and requested a reconsideration for my seniority and salary and they brushed me off. They even blocked me from transferring to another role as a developer because of “business need” for the project. I was really really upset but luckily I knew my worth. I applied to an external SWE role, got more seniority and add an extra 30k to my salary with a pension. Don’t let them dictate your worth… you have to decide that.

I moved across the country in the fall to join a V5 firm and I absolutely hate it. I’ve decided to leave after bonuses in January to seek out a job where I may have some semblance of a weekend and perhaps some mental stability. I’m finding it extremely difficult to deal with the mental burden of just “hanging in there” and selling yet another year of my life to the biglaw machine. I know this is a choice I’ve made, but the toll it has taken on my mental health has been shocking. Any advice?
