I once was trying to take a personal day. My uncle was 2 hours away at another outlet of his job when he was taken to the hospital for chest pains. I was his only relative in the state, and we are like brother and sister. I left to be there in the middle of the night, didn’t text until 6am, the earliest the secretary takes those calls. She texted back I needed to get other teachers to cover it. I called my husband crying. He told me to not worry about it. He went to my school and accused them of a hostile work environment. The principal told him that was district policy if they ran out of subs. He told them to show him in writing where that was identified. Of course, they couldn’t. They have never said another word about days. It does help I’m from Chicago, am loud, know my rights. I’m now in small town Louisiana, and I do not go with their “that’s how we do it” crap.
Professional Development yes, but not sick day. That would be against my contract.
No. Talk to your union rep.
Never. Other teachers would cover rather than not allowing someone a sick leave. It’s so seldom asked of us that we would help admin if necessary.
NO WAY!
Only time was because of attending a training that needed sub coverage. Our district is so huge that subs who want to work pick their classes. I had my sub request for a month and no body took it. Or they backed out because they decided not to work that day. ( another problem we have) It was a high sub day and 9 teachers went without subs so other teachers had to cover. Guilt, yes. I double check now if it’s for a training. If I am so sick I call in, I rather give Starbucks gift cards to teachers who cover my class. I can see the issue of going in at the elementary level. It’s harder to replace a teacher for the whole day. Small districts too.
I will work but when I have a classroom throwing up and have diarrhea, I will call you to come clean it up.
