Have you ever been told that you cannot take a sick day due to lack of staff coverage?

I once was trying to take a personal day. My uncle was 2 hours away at another outlet of his job when he was taken to the hospital for chest pains. I was his only relative in the state, and we are like brother and sister. I left to be there in the middle of the night, didn’t text until 6am, the earliest the secretary takes those calls. She texted back I needed to get other teachers to cover it. I called my husband crying. He told me to not worry about it. He went to my school and accused them of a hostile work environment. The principal told him that was district policy if they ran out of subs. He told them to show him in writing where that was identified. Of course, they couldn’t. They have never said another word about days. It does help I’m from Chicago, am loud, know my rights. I’m now in small town Louisiana, and I do not go with their “that’s how we do it” crap.

Professional Development yes, but not sick day. That would be against my contract.

No. Talk to your union rep.

Never. Other teachers would cover rather than not allowing someone a sick leave. It’s so seldom asked of us that we would help admin if necessary.

NO WAY!

Only time was because of attending a training that needed sub coverage. Our district is so huge that subs who want to work pick their classes. I had my sub request for a month and no body took it. Or they backed out because they decided not to work that day. ( another problem we have) It was a high sub day and 9 teachers went without subs so other teachers had to cover. Guilt, yes. I double check now if it’s for a training. If I am so sick I call in, I rather give Starbucks gift cards to teachers who cover my class. I can see the issue of going in at the elementary level. It’s harder to replace a teacher for the whole day. Small districts too.

I will work but when I have a classroom throwing up and have diarrhea, I will call you to come clean it up.

10 years ago today I had my tubes tied. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. It took years standing up to practitioners, reiterating my preference, and fighting for medical decisions over my own body. Ten years later and it was all worth it. No hormones, no condoms, no risk of making the hard decisions some I know have had to make. For anyone contemplating it, for anyone fighting with their docs, don’t give up if it’s what you really want.

Serious question: Men, those seeking a medical opinion from a Dermatologist for hair loss, would you consult with a Dermatologist if he himself was bald? I have one that is rated well (patient reviews) as a Doc, but in his photo he is bald. I'm not sure if he would truly care for my hair loss story. Thoughts?

I believe people should get vaccinated when they can and if they are able to. I also think it’s wrong for governments to mandate vaccination. Doing so severely infringes on individual freedom and sets a bad precedent for the future.

Should I feel bad if I stopped caring about covid? I’m vaxed, boosted and I had the OG strain last year. My family gives me crap for not wanting to wear a mask anymore, if the mask drops below my nose they immediately ask me to put it back up. Everyone I know is getting omicron regardless of how boosted and masked they are. Am I a bad person for giving up?

Duke University has reported 364 COVID cases. 356 of those people were vaccinated, for a vaccine rate of 97.8% which is way above what is considered necessary for herd immunity. Maybe herd immunity isn’t really a thing? Also, if getting the vaccine is now about reducing COVID impact vs. immunity, then there’s no way for herd immunity to exist, right?
