Have you ever negotiated your travel schedule? N00b to being in the road and PPD wants me to do a 10hr west to east coast flight plus a few hours driving to get to client site.

That seems unreasonable. Are you open to staying weekends? Or I would request one week on one week off. That’s just not sustainable on a weekly basis.

Family situation doesn’t matter. That is just untenable and unreasonable- that is almost another full week of “work” just in travel time. I’d negotiate Monday to following Wednesday and then a remote week or have them find someone closer.

Why 10 hour? No direct flights? What’s your solution? If it’s reasonable, you should talk to the partner - or maybe the SM may be more receptive

Have a wife no kids if that helps

10 hour flight! You flying from the east coast to west coast of what? The Atlantic Ocean? Talk to the PPD and see if you can work out a 10 Day travel schedule (fly out Sunday, fly back Wednesday/Thursday week).

like

Yeah I would be. Those are good ideas SM1! Thank you

I was asked to do east to west cost - 5+ hour flight plus 5+ hours of driving on Sunday nights to a desert location.... i just said no. Its not safe & id go crazy.

I don’t get the 10 hour flight just coast to coast. Are you counting time difference as real commute time? I really don’t think the request is all that out of line as a 12 hour day isn’t heroic.

Depending on your situation, I asked the partner for corporate housing when I was flying coast to coast. My wife's employer was flexible to allow her to work remotely, so it worked out well for us. I still got my meals paid for (Uncle D is good that way) and you can point out that you're saving money as well as time so you can really focus on the engagement.

D4, I imagine connections. If you fly to RDU, for example, from the West coast, you're going to have to connect. Same for most smaller destinations. Plus, west to east you're losing 3 hours and probably taking a red-eye or getting in at 5pm on Monday. Lots of ways I can see this happening. Personally, I couldn't see flying red-eyes so flew Sunday instead. Really cut down on home time, which didn't make my wife happy. I was either gone or exhausted.

Currently doing DCA to SeaTac + 3 hrs of driving after I land. With delays, my longest travel day so far has been 16 hours. It is brutal. Most of the time I can come every other week. What gets me through most days is knowing October will be here at some point 😫

Magnet - Fair point about possible connections. It would be ok to fly Sunday’s once in a while, but not weekly. Not a fan of red eyes either. But doing 12 hours on Monday, no problem. I think we need more details from the OP.

Went to HR about wanting to switch mentors, which I thought was kosher and no one has issues with, but apparently, at my firm, they do. Then while I was on the phone with HR explaining this, they suddenly bring up a possible staffing issue on my project that’s come up (hinting at I’m going to be removed from my project without saying it outright.). I’ve heard no such thing from anyone that would warrant this, so I feel foul play because I wanted to switch mentors. Anything I can do?

Maybe put that amount per month into the joint account and then she can do what she wants with the rest? Reasonable? How do others handle expenses?
