I know of multiple copywriters. Haven’t heard of an AD.

Not sure. Maybe it takes longer to master the digital tools needed to be an AD.
I have. They went back to school though. Copywriter is somewhat easier. I’ve seen a few people do it without going back to school but instead just putting together a sick portfolio and having an art director pal or two help polish things. Obviously, you’d have to start at the bottom again (jr copywriter) regardless of your account experience.
If you already know the technical skills could be easier for you, but likely you’d have to redo your book to be more advertising centric if you want a gig as a jr AD.
If you know any jr copywriters looking for a partner, you could also try and slide in that way. Still need a decent portfolio though.
Make a fake campaign a week for 3 months, then keep the best 4-5. Ask some creative coworkers to give you feedback, polish it, and you’ll be in a pretty good spot.
Kind of. I went from a shitty sales job in a different industry to hired art director in about a year and a half, with zero experience in concepting or design on day one.
Definitely possible and you should do it if you’ve already got some background. The money will come back.
Yes I have. She did bring it up the itch to switch to her supervisors about 1-2 years into her accounts career, who was supportive of her. She is now doing pretty well at an ACD level at a good shop.
