Have you heard about PwC switching to a system where they pay people based on where they live and not based on the assigned office? This is affecting people who work remotely for a large market office but live in a low cost area. I heard HR has started sending out emails and telling people to expect a pay adjustment. Seems like getting a pay cut will anger a lot of people...

It makes sense, why should someone get paid an NYC salary if they live in Florida... why is that fair to the people who work for the Miami office making 15k less than the NY folks

like

It is not fair especially in your example. New York you have to pay tax on where your office is. So even if you live in a different state you still have my city tax. Depending on which state you live in you could have residency taxes in two states.

KPMG 1. I think you approach to this is too simplistic. I’ve notice at least in my practice, that many of those in NYC for example do more added value work such as complex planning, where as smaller office in LCOL do less value added work such as compliance. Why should these people take a significant pay cut when their work is more value added? But if they are unhappy with PwC approach they can always leave and some will probably leave

like

Pay is market rate, the market rate is based on the COL and the work done, the equivalence would be to leave and try to find another job in Florida, not another job by a NY firm. And if you leave and find a new job in the Florida, the pay for such job will reflect the COL of Florida.

Not gonna happen I think. Too much work for HR to check whether people are cheating.

Not that much work. Doesn’t PWC make you list your physical location each day on your timesheet? It’s not hard to justify firing someone who lies on their timesheet.

It depends on what your job is, but being unable to make a next day 8am meeting (post COVID) will be a clue. So will IP logins. Checking those is becoming more and more common.

At any rate, people usually out themselves. If they’re in a state with an income tax, they probably want to get away from the higher NY tax rate, and the convenience of the employer rule. And/or they want in network health coverage where they live. If you’re in Florida and a hurricane hits or you’re in a Texas and a freak snowstorm affects your ability to work, it might get hard to pretend you’re in NY.

like

I haven’t heard this, but I know someone on temporary assignment currently living in HCOL city who has an offer to stay longer, but her pay would be based on her permanent LCOL city. So, if that is the policy, they aren’t applying it to the opposite situation. I’d like her to stay longer, but I don’t think it’s financially possible. Definitely not fair to ask someone to stay in HCOL city with LCOL pay.

I am a newly promoted supervisor who has been with my company for 3 years. The promotion came with a salary increase & I was happy about that.

However, since in my new role I have come to discover that people I am now overseeing have a higher pay rate than I do. Some have been with the company longer than I have, some have not.

Maybe it was my bad for not asking for not negotiating my pay raise, but I am wondering what you would do in this situation?

How much does Microsoft pay their entry level designers? The pay must be worth it right since designers go there to die. The bar to entry seems to be extremely low as Microsoft hasn’t produced anything remotely attractive visual / experience wise in the last decades. A company with over 100,000 designers but nobody has any eye for visual design or what LOOKS good… there’s a reason they’re not respected in tech and nobody’s first choice.
