Have you noticed that it’s the low paying jobs and the nonprofit jobs the ones that still require cover letters? I find cover letters to be archaic and pretentious.

There was a job I was actually really excited about, for a legislation paralegal for a political non-profit. And they wanted a video cover letter. Immediately turned me off from it and I didn't apply.

That sounds weirdly interesting to me. Awful as a requirement but if I saw an application that maybe had it as an option instead of a cover letter, I’d be interested.

I *hate* cover letters and usually skip postings that require them unless I’m really interested in the role.

Having worked at a nonprofit in a non legal capacity, I would guess that their hiring process for legal support is tied to their process for all other employees. Like the same person determines all of it, and that person doesn’t know anything about what’s standard for the legal world.

As a technical point on the protests. Whose responsibility is it to shut down the protests? The law not to protest outside a judges house is federal. So the FBI? Should they be getting more scrutiny for not acting since they’re (supposedly) not a political arm of the government? But riot/protest control is not really their remit. They would enlist local PD to enforce? Similarly, if the locals said enough of this, is the applicable local/state law to act blocking a street? Not having a permit?

I am classified as an agent selling health insurance but there’s a private email I recently gained access to showing the company is using my broker license and I suspected that since I’m the agent of record on a lot of business. They pay for everything including leads but I’m working as an agent in one email whereas there’s another showing I’m using my license as a broker. I get $43,000 salary plus commissions so averaging $80 K a year. Any advice?

Are there any paralegals making a move to associate or wanting to make a move to associate?

I have family visiting and requested about a month ago for a few days off after Christmas but it wasn’t granted since my other teammate has that time off. The main client we bill to has the entire season off so I’m not sure why I wasn’t given off. I indirectly let my manager know and was advised to hash it out with my team. How would you approach this?

Does anyone have advice on how to keep track of cases? I am 6 months in at a small med/insurance firm. When we are assigned cases by clients, it's my job to request and organize the medical records. We're starting to get dozens of COVID cases, in addition to regular litigation cases, and I am SO OVERWHELMED. I'm currently in a "paralysis-over analysis" stage and don't know how to get myself out of it. I feel like I'm drowning, help.

In NYC. I am currently in a very toxic environment and would love to get another position. Any assistance would be great!! TIA

Anyone whose role is a Contract Analyst, how would you describe your experience learning the ins and outs of contract work? I come a litigation background and have an interview for a Contracts Analyst position that I’m interested in, but unsure of what to really expect from the role…I draft boilerplate pleadings regularly so I assume it’s similar? Any insight would be helpful! TIA!

I have a total of 12 months of experience as an IP paralegal. The first 6 months were with a global law firm and the second 6 months were with a famous retail company. I am currently working with an agency that would like to assign me to a company that is in need of an IP paralegal for a total of 6 months. My current salary with the agency is £35k (based on my current experience) but I would like to ask for more money before I accept this new role. Please advise how much money I should ask for.

Just a question, maybe more of a vent, but I have been a paralegal for almost 6 years and worked in 3 different law firms and there is always 1 partner that just doesn’t want to do any work but also doesn’t want to retire. And I have always been the main/only paralegal for them. They are always confused about how to practice, don’t remember or just avoid the work. I have no idea how to manage them and get my work done. Any tips?

I know people have asked in here how to go in house. After getting an in house job, I think my best tip is to get an internal referral. This is way easier than I thought. Since employees get paid for referrals if they get hired, usually they are very likely to give you one. Reach out to people on LinkedIn (even if you don’t know them) and ask if they have a referral program!! I did this and within a matter of hours had an interview lined up.

Accepted a job in NYC and looking to move! Any advice and apartment recs? I’m moving from MD and looking for apartments in Newark, Jersey City, Bayonne, etc.

How do you deal with burnout? I am finding it hard to stay motivated. I cut back on the hours I was working but still feel drained at the end of day

My Shareholder came into my office yesterday and proceeded to tell me that "we" were getting sloppy & "we" needed to get our billable up and that she had missed things. She made a point to say hers were low & she never gave me info regarding billable time. Our biggest client cuts half our time.
During the interview they never mentioned there were billable req.
1 month ago she was singing my praises. Had been real sick last 2 months and went to HR re med accommodation and now this.

Currently at a firm in Seattle, WA making $68k a year. I have a BA as well as a paralegal cert and 6 YOE. I recently asked for an increase to $90k based off research for comps. but not hopeful they’ll give it to me. I’ve been searching around for other jobs and have recently been contacted by a few w/ comps of $95k but would have to go back to the office. I currently can work remote but the partners are telling new hires eventually will be back in the office 5days. Go or stay?

What do you all use to calculate trial dates? Any cool websites or excel spreadsheets?

Hi everyone. Is it typical for the attorney to take credit for the work a paralegal does? An example: I gave some ideas about deposition questions and some observations I made (I was asked about giving suggestions) regarding a witness and the attorney mentioned that he’s the one that had these great questions/observations. Zero credit or thank you for the work I did.

Anyone working as a virtual freelance paralegal? How do you get clients?

With the understanding that as paras there is some amount of drafting involved, how many paras here are asked or tasked to draft pleadings including motions? And do you feel comfortable doing so as in do you believe it’s a task incumbent of attorneys or is it fine if paras do it?

Hello everyone! I recently start working as a paralegal in USA. Managing attorney recently open a new location in another state and only comes back once every 6 to 8 weeks. My title is lead paralegal but I'm pretty much in charge of supervising other paralegals and keeping track of their work. Is this normal is USA?

I’ve been activity looking for new paralegal roles but my last position was working in the public sector. Some have told me that it’s a pro, others have said that it’s a con. I’m largely applying for positions in the private sector now, and I’ve found that I don’t have many of the entry level skills like e-filing that employers expect. Is there any alternative to taking on a role that is completely entry-level to gain those?

I need help with Christmas gift ideas for the other paralegal in our office. It’s only the two of us, and I’ve been at the firm for 4ish months. We have a good relationship so far, but feel like I’m still too new to know what she’d really like.

Do any of you have the title “paralegal” but no paralegal certification? I do a lot of actual paralegal work but not sure if it would be looked down upon to use that as my title on LinkedIn/email signature.

(My company doesn’t really assign titles btw - my boss calls me his paralegal)
